Rick Kay is not going to be happy with me...
I think the Sacagawea Dollar is a more attractive design than the Schoolgirl Dollar.

[Edit to add: I like the Sac's eagle better. But not nearly so much that it changes what I think about the coins overall.]

Agreed!
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
andy you need top get your eyes checked
I do prefer the Sac, and I am also trying to stir things up. It's easy to do when so many of you have the aesthetic sensibilities of, well, CCU's interior decorator.

I would love to have the gold Sac but like the 1933 $20 its forbidden fruit.
Oh, that was a given long ago. But seriously, the Sac is far more graceful in design. And I assure you that my motives are the purest. Even if I am, for the most part, more attracted to Shoshoni squaws than Victorian heifers.

How about "balance, grace and spirit"?
But to be more specific, both obverse portraits are attractive. I have a slight preference for the Sac for three reasons. First, all Morgan did was throw a girlish wig on his bland (Bland?) head of 1878. That's not creative, unless your idea of creativity is dressing up Mr Potatohead. Second, I can't tell where her forehead ends and her nose begins. (Just like in 1878, and again, just like Mr Potatohead.) Third, the positioning of the date and legend on the Schoolgirl isn't quite as balanced as on the Sac. .
As for the reverse, it's a no brainer. But for the benefit of the blind, and for CCU, I'll explain. Look at Morgan's eagle. It's angry, menacing and generally unpleasant to look at. Plus it's sitting on a ridiculous perch with some poorly drawn branches and leaves. Why would we want something like that on our coins? Are we looking for a battle?
As for the Sac, its Eagle is soaring gracefully, proudly and freely, all surrounded elegantly by stars, mottos and legends. It's a superb design and one that creates the "right" image for our nation.

I think it is one of his greatest works.
I also liked the schoolgirl pattern more. The original designed Sacky was nicer than the issued one before it was made more cartoonish.

It is really unfortunate that the sac does not get the respect it deserves. In 150 years it will be a killer coin. It has low mintages, it circulates to an extant, and the design is very attractive, The subject matter is compelling, its ties to this nations history is indisputable.
Give her a break!

Coin snobs...whaddaya expect...'if it ain't old, it's crap'.
As I said, I'm no Sacky fan...don't even own one...but making it a plain old dollar ruined it. Bet it would have a lot more respect if it had been a "limited edition"...AGE or ASE like...

The image that Andy just posted does look kind of nice, though. I think the way the light goes across a Sac when you're holding it is less flattering than that sculpture.

Ha, Ha, Ha!!! Good try Andy!
I've seen hundreds of those bald eagles. Everybody tries to take photos of them when they are majestically soaring through the skies. I'm sure they try very hard.
<< <i>The design of the Sac looks as if the designer was trying to be photo-realistic, and in my eyes, he didn't quite pull it off. >>
She, actually. (Glenna Goodacre).
Each within their own context, with the Sac as a millennial-era design and the Schoolgirl as a 19th century design, I like them both. In different ways, but I think they are both nice designs.

Carl - Thank you. I now have a deeper understanding of why the Bald Eagle is seen as quintessentially American.
