The ANA

For all the "rebuttal" whining that Horton does in CoinWorld when people mention problems with the ANA, why doesn't he realize that if people state such problems, and there are none, then there is a HUGE miscommunication/perception issue?
Instead of attacking back and trying to refute them, he should go to the root to understand why that perception is there. It isn't enough to go back, after the fact, and get opinions then make changes. One should go out FIRST to get thoughts then make the plan.
There is NOTHING I have seen from any of the ANA board members to make me think it is worthwhile for me to join the ANA. I'm in my mid-30s. I would think I would be someone they would want to have join.
Instead, I just see whining, politicing, and more whining.
Maybe Cipoletti (sic?) and Horton should get accounts here and listen to people and get feedback? Maybe they should just learn to LISTEN in general?

Exactly. Pay attention to what they do, not what they say.

Much like this forum..... Cheers, RickO

With Horton anyone who is critical of the ANA is always wrong and misunderstaning the situation etc. The ANA seems to be an institution
interested in the status quo and self preservation at all costs and anyone questioning them seems to be looked upon as "the enemy".
They seem very disconected from the ideas and opinions of the average collector.
<< <i>I am an ANA member who DOES utilize the ANA website to communicate with the board of governors. Today I got an email from Patti Fenner in response to my feedback to the board on lack of communication. She says that less than 1% of the membership (less than 300 people have written to the board. Everyone here who is an ANA member should have the guts to write an email and express your own personal feelings about how the ANA is being run. If you are not an ANA member write to them also. Posting on this board is just to fulfill your own satisfactions. Posting to the ANA board of governors on the ana website www.money.org will get your message directly to the people who matter. Believe me, they each DO read what you say and will most likely respond. If you don't like what they say in their response, tell them. Let's make the ANA a better organization. Steve
The ANA could sign on to this forum and directly communicate with a lot more people than they would get in a one on one email.
Why is it that people think initiating contact should always be member first to the ANA instead of the ANA making the effort to
communicate by responding to postings in a forum such as this? Why can't the ANA have the "guts" as you put it to communicate
in this forum. I think we all know the answer.

Lost control of this organization.
As in most things, loss of active
participation, results in the loss of
Democracy.

<< <i>"Numismatist" is an enjoyable read and the library privileges are without equal. Those are my two reasons for being part of the ANA. >>
I've heard those are good, but my statement was: "There is NOTHING I have seen from any of the board members ....."
I don't see them out there espousing the 2 items you stated as reasons to join the ANA. I see posturing and whining.
Michigan hit on a point I was hinting around about......that they are not going out and being PROACTIVE in communications...they are waiting for others to come to them. People practice apathy and many just say "screw it" when they don't like something...so they walk.
A good president/board would go out and do something proactive.....go visit smaller/regional shows. Ask the contigency what would make for a better ANA and then small the top suggestions (once getting most mention) along a step or two to try to get more feedback and make it happen.
They are too old and stuck in their ways.

Having these sort of discussions on a private company's message board is suboptimal, IMHO. I'd much rather the ANA operate such a board.
And while they're at it, they could put together their own, non-brand-specific registry too.
money.org is a better site than it used to be, but it is still a long way to go before it is particularly useful. I visit it only once every few months. If the ANA was really interested in serving me, I'd be on that site every day.
<< <i>Why is this discussion being held here? Wouldn't it be nice if the ANA put up a messageboard that was as heavily trafficked as this one? And to take it a step further -- a place where the ANA board members were regular and frequent participants.

The ANA wouldn't tolerate a message board like this because they just can't stand criticism.

Money.org? What's that (without me going there)? Something ANA related? Sounds more like something around an investment company or something.
If the ANA does have a board, I (honestly) don't know about it. Maybe they should PROACTIVELY PROMOTE it if they do have one?

One of many reasons why I won't be renewing my membership. The magazine's nice, but it's not enough.

This is precisely what I was going to say. If there should be anywhere for the broad swath of collectors to openly discuss coins, it should be on an ANA forum, not a necessarily legally cautious public company's message board (here). If the ANA provided at least this resource and ran it well, they could better justify their existence in the hobby. They are becoming increasingly marginalized in the hobby as just custodians of a library and donated collection and sponsors of a couple crappy shows a each year.

to establish a headquarters in Colorado Springs that one of the prominent people in the ANA argued against it saying this was not
what the ANA needed. His opinions were ignored. Perhaps when establishing a national headquarters and all that goes with that a sense of simplicity was lost and the mindset of an institution that wants to protect the status quo became more ingrained.

Be careful of the "smoke and mirrors" that most people use. And speaking of the upcoming election, there is a certain individual who will be making an announcement on Friday, December 1, 2006 on whether to run or not. Can't say who that person is, but I can give everyone a hint - this person has raised lots of cain about the hijinks of the ANA these past months. Stay tuned!
