Do you have what it takes to get your name here? Have you earned your spot among the elite?

It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Plus, the o-129 has a famous pedigree "ex LordM holey coin vest"
edit: Baley's is o-115, so is the o-129 another new variety?
<< <i>I think baley's 1806 o129 makes the others look small-time. >>
That depends on how you look at it. As a discovery coin, it's huge, no doubt. In that respect it tops the list by a wide margin. From a value standpoint, though, it isn't that far ahead of the group. In fact, Marty's Frankie has a higher market value.

I think you might be mixing up coins.

That made it... Added.

just one is difficult. Frankly I think he was at his most suckiness when he picked
up the inverted "S" '68 proof half dollars. I've been looking for years and he pulls
them right out from under my nose.
Of course he also found the complete set of Cracker Jacks tokens for a song.

Those just suck, but it takes a lot to reach the "YOU SUCK!" Hall of Fame!!!
It was the finest known, and the only known Mint State VAM 26A LDS double clashed G with counterclashing. It sold on eBay for over $4,000.

Not even close. Now if you paid $50 for it and got $13K. Then we're talking.

That one works.
Where possible, would it be possible to link back to the original threads for further discussion?
Also, I'd be interested in what they buyer paid and what the coin is worth. I don't follow modern proofs, for example, and I don't know if the ones that were listed are worth $1,000, $5,000, or $15,000. It would help give context for those who don't know everything...
Here are my contributions:
1860-O dime
Paid $408 (or $8, after the rest of the lot was sold). Now PCGS AU58 pop 1/0, worth $10,000+
(this thread is a followup to the thread that ziggy29 posted, with a link back to the original. Thanks, ziggy)
1855 $1 gold
Paid $1,000 (or $400, after the rest of the lot was sold). Now PCGS MS63, worth $10,000+
George Washington inaugural button
Paid $50, sold for $4,000 (and then resold, and resold, and resold -- last sale I heard of was $6,500)
Robert Fulton So-Called Dollar in gold, HK-375
Paid $26, similar piece sold in recent Goldberg sale for $2,500
I remember a story a while ago about someone who bought an early CC $20 gold piece for $1,000 and sold it for $30,000. Does anyone have details on that?
There's also the pair of early naval medals that were written up in The Numismatist a year or two ago. Paid $500, worth $20,000, or something like that...

<< <i>How about those common S.C.D.'s that I sold to ya. Someone actually PAID ME to take them away.
Now, now. I was going to return them but would have felt real bad about it...
But this one made up for the rest!

How about buying an 1852 3c silver for $50, finding that it was the 1852, 1 over inverted 2 variety, getting it slabbed with the variety, and selling it for over $2,500?

I think that's a "you suck." But be careful, lest someone try to spin this into an example of an evil dealer ripping a widow....

Coin was purchased from an online auction, just don't remember which one.
Edited to add it graded PCGS VF-35.

In general, VAMs are an easy place to make those huge windfalls. (Some are in higher grades than commonly known too and impossible to price therefore.) I have dozens in my spreadsheet with thousands of percent paper gains. I know many other cherrypickers have the same as me too.

Yeah, I don't doubt it. But with some of the anti-dealer mentalities 'round these parts, if it can be spun into ripping widows and newbies, it will be!
<< <i>Even using the VAMView/VAMlink number, it is nearly 8000%. Of course, it isn't sold and won't be for a while. >>
The cherrypick doesn't have to be sold to qualify. Just needs a low purchase price and a high current market value. Some stuff is tricky, though, since there isn't much in the way of sales history to use as a guide.

<< <i>I bought a 1929-S Lincoln in a rattler MS65RD from a dealer at a little local show for around $200 ... got it upgraded the first time through and sold it for $3,700.
Not good enough, if you would have bought it raw for $4 and sold it for what you did you would be there.

76-S MS68 Ikes (I'm an Ike addict!
The Kennedy didn't seem to have any marks on it, so I sent it in with my Ike batch on a whim. (I know
NOTHING about grading Kennedy Halves)...It came back MS69 is still the only one ever graded!

<< <i>I thought my HK222 purchase that graded tied for finest known might qualify. Not to mention the hoard I bought. Or the HK-20 that graded as a proof out of that hoard. >>
Tom, none of those are HOF material. Now if you got the HK222 for $10 and sold it for $5K that is more in line.
