Whether or not the present state of ANACS was directly his fault...we'll never know. We do know that he was in charge and knowing that and thier current state, I don't see how anyone can honestly consider him joining another company is a blessing.
As far as your other comments, when a company is perceived as doing something improper, illegal, immoral, etc....yes, it ultimately falls on the shoulders of the individual(s) leading that company.
Step 1: Send mole to #3 company. Step 2: Have him make as many farked up decisions in one year as possible. Step 3: Hire mole back, and have him bring back lots of inside info. Step 4: Profit!
This is way farked up from top to bottom. >>
I guess I'm a skeptic too, because this is exactly what I thought when I read this thread title. So how long until he goes to NGC?

Clever!
But, more likely he is just chasing the buck... as in ICG approached JT and said, "How many jelly donuts would it take to bring you back?"
"Wars are really ugly! They're dirty and they're cold. I don't want nobody to shoot me in the foxhole." Mary
If I were asked my opinion, I would say that ANACS made THE mistake in hiring JT. He obviously was running a third tier TPG when they "got" him, and he succeded in typical fashion by making ANACS into IMHO the newest third tier TPG. In the TPG business, the perception of accuracy, and the reputation each company has regarding their own specific "niche" is paramount. Once ANACS, (under JT) started passing out "70s" like Halloween candy, and lost some of their credibility regarding PROPER variety attribution, they were "toast". I honestly believe that the change in holders will be good for the hobby IF they (ANACS) now change BACK to the old style holders. The coins slabbed by them during this "loose" period will be easily identified, and presumably properly discounted or reslabbed. Formerly, I was a staunch supporter of ANACS for the way they graded "Classic, variety, and problem material. Not now. To quote Goose3....... ""Put a fork in 'em"

Maybe, maybe not. Unlike PCGS and NGC, ANACS has a big fat parent company. There's a very real possibility that his hands were tied by corporate mandates coming from suits who hadn't a clue about the coin grading marketplace. And before anyone says it technically, yes, PCGS has a parent company, but Ron reports to the guy who founded PCGS.
For those of you who have never had the privelege of meeting James, I can tell you I've talked with him many times. One time, when I interviewed him for a possible article, we had a 2 hour lunch. He is a very bright and personable fellow. Every time I met him he's willing to take the time to talk and is always very friendly. ICG didn't just hire him as CEO as a fluke.
Remember this is business and like any other coin business it's how to make money and a lot more of it. ICG would not survive, thrive, and grow (like they have over the past several years) if their product wasn't a good one and had general market acceptance. James is a business man and not a stupid one at that. It will be interesting to see what things occur over the next year or so at ICG. I agree that their image could be improved.

I think Russ makes a good point here. The relatively new owners of ANACS might have been forcing some changes that they created. Generally, when one company buys another one, they have some changes in mind.

Russ.. If you are stating that he may have been a pawn or a puppet, yes indeed that may be possible....but we've heard nothing one way or the other from either side.
He should have stayed "retired to be with his family" for longer than 1 week.
Just yesterday morning, they let me know you were gone. ICG, the plans they made put an end to you. I walked out this mornin', and I wrote down this song; I just can't remember who to send it to.
I've seen fire, and I've seen rain. I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end. I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend, But I always thought that ICG would hire you again.

Maybe he figured out that he didn't like his family? Or vice-versa.
