LURKERS: Tell us who you are and why you don't post...

  • I've been lurking for a few weeks. I used to post at the NGC site but took some time off from coins and when I came back, the NGC site was just way tooooo inactive. I haven't posted in the attempt to avoid admitting that I stricly now collect Modern slabbed commem.s only. yeah, yeah I know I'm a loser/wannabe. I only grab ms/pf69 pieces slabbed by NGc or PCGS in my attempt to complete a set. I used to be very heavy in early commem.s and Franklins but I found the going too slow and often expensive and I wasn't having fun. Now back to the shadows................image
Everything I write is my opinion.

    Looking for alot of crap.
  • I have been here a few weeks now and probably have not introduced myself. As most of you may have figured out by now I collect certified old commems and have a registry set listed on PCGS which is 40% completed. I am working on minor '65,'66, & '67 SMS sets and have a couple of proof sets listed, a '53 and '57. I have loved coins as far back as I can remember, since I found my first SLQ in change way back when I was just a little lurker and I more than likely still have it.

I have found there to be nice people here that are very helpful when asked to be. Thank you all for letting me in be a part of your message boards.

  • I lurk here because I don't have anything worthwhile to contribute. I have more questions than bill Clinton told lies, but I refuse not to try and figure/find the answers out myself. My collection consist of an inheritance after my mothers death, along with some really nice toned silverware and a monster toned silver butter dish. image

  • I like reading the knowledge that flows through these forums but am turned off by the petty verbal assaults that pop up now and then. If they weren't so absurdly ridiculous, they would most certainly be sad. Enough said about that.
As far my collecting habit is concerned, my main focus and interest is in collecting morgan silver dollars. The name of my set is "Arizona" in Basic Circulation Strikes. I collect them with no thought what so ever as an investment, just for the pure beauty of the morgan dollar itself.

I second that idea. Or maybe its because I know myself and how quickly I can devolve to someone elses level. I have already said to much!!! RUN AWAY, RUN AWAY!!!!!

This is an interesting thread. Took me almost a year to get around to reading it though.
  • Cool old thread. I lurked about a year befor joining.

I'm still learning so I read this about 2 hrs. or more a day.

  • I am a wanabe collector of all coins. I don't post mainly because of time. However, I do lurk here since there is so much knowledge and up to date information not found anywhere else about numismatics.

Beats Coin World and Numismatic News IMO and I don't have to pay. By the way, I have read many articles from these publications and they sometimes base there opinions or information from here. image
  • I've been reading the posts on this board every day for almost a year. I'm a musician-singer-songwriter and my largest piece of silver is a flute. I needed an answer to a question about a morgan that I wasn't able to figure out for myself. That is what prompted me to sign up and write my first post. It turned out not to be an error but a variety -- 1878-S VAM 1D, and I thank the forum members for helping me out. I have learned a lot from the pictures, questions and comments posted, as well as the links provided to other sites with more pics and info to be gleaned. I don't have any certified coins (yet), but will make that plunge soon. I like all coins and really appreciate the pictures of the MS grades as I can see what they are actually supposed to look like before circulation wore the details away. I am collecting modern sets from the Mint. I am disappointed that they decided to switch to satin finish on the uncirculated mint sets in 2005 as that is when I started collecting. I wonder if they are trying to stop people from cutting open the sets to get business strikes, just a thought. I also have lincoln cents, jefferson nickels, washington quarters and state quarters albums that I am working on. I also have all but two of the Susan B's and most of the Sacagawea dollars. I like just about everything. Additionally, I have one civil war token, one large cent, one shield nickel, one 2cent, one 3cent, one flying eagle (all in circulated condition), you get the idea. I recently bought my first commemorative. I'd like to thank everyone for their input to these boards on all ranges of topics. Your discussions help more than you may realize. JS

I lurk! I admit it...I'm on these posts daily and may go a week w/o posting. I have a daily average of 0.50 posts a day and have been on these boards since Aug. 2002. I have to keep my big mouth shut so as not to get kicked off of these boards. image

  • I lurk because I am. It seems that the few posts I've done have been ignored. There seems to be an inner circle who talk among themselves and ignore anyone with minimum posts. However, I am a proud owner of a "troll" from Lucy (I forgot to add a smiley face to a caustic post I made). I'm a collector of all "classic" coins and am just coming back to the hobby after a 20 year hiatus. I hate where the hobby has gone. Toned (tarnished) coins do nothing for me, nor do slabbed coins and VAMs (whatever they are) and modern crap. Therefore, I have nothing to add to the current trends. I love raw and original coins, and I have no profit motive. My grandchildren will get all my coins. I do learn a lot here, however. My favorite contributor is Lord Marcovan, who not only is extremely knowledegable but also writes very literate posts. The grammaticaly illiterate posts on this forum are atrocious.

  • I lurk because I dont consider myself a collector, I'm still more of an admirerer. I have a collection that was started by my great-grandfather, then passed to my father, and when he finally kicks over I'll probably get it due to my brothers disinterest. I recently decided to begin working on the collection myself, but luckily found this place or I might have been running around with a bunch of crap, bad attitude, and missing much money due to poor purchases. I lurked for a couple of months, but decided if ever I wanted to make a post I would need to sign up first. I remember enjoying looking through this collection as a kid, so to see some of the childlike things that go on, I see the enthusiasm I had with this stuff when I was younger. Does that mean I think everything here is informative and enjoy reading some of the personal bickering? No, it means I'm choosing not to acknowledge it because it doesnt interest me. I already have so many thanks to some of you simply for being forward, open, and honest about coins, the hobby, and your own personal views. Some I might not understand or agree with, but respect just the same.

As for now, I'm collecting knowledge. When they start making the knowledge coin, I'm all over it. image
  • I am sort of a lurker, I guess I go through phases.
But a couple of years ago, I got attacked for my negative opinion when it was asked for, go figure.
I am sure that scared off a lot of lurkers for sure.

It's great to see all the newbies and longer term lurkers.

A lot of good posts get lost because of the speed of the board, lack of interest, or because
the statement/ question isn't fully understood. Many times I'll see a question and be able
to provide a partial answer and assume an expert will be along soon but he doesn't and the
thread sinks. Many times observations are somewhat complete in themselves and don't need
a response at all. Most everything will be read by everyone interested.

There is a little less likelihood for most of us to respond to posters we don't know but that's
just human nature and, I for one, hardly mean it as a snub.

I've noticed several of Savvy's posts but don't remember if I responded or not. This place
    does move very fast sometimes.

I lurk too, but I like to throw out some pictures every now and then, like my collection of bust halves. I'll probably post my half cent or large cent collection sometime this year or next. Posting like Russ looks like a full-time job! image
  • In numismatic transactions, the person with the most knowledge wins, whether he be buyer or seller. Lurking is the most efficient way to accomplish the gathering of knowledge, without wasting energy on flame wars and triviality.

Then again, we all get bored now and then, explaining why I'm posting in the lurkers thread...

  • I have been reading the threads here for the last 6 months or so. I just started collecting in the last year & don't feel I have enough knowledge to add to discussions yet. The best way to learn is to listen. I have learned a tremendous amount here and thank you all for sharing.

Most of you may know I spend time and energy on the open forum but I started out here. I come here almost every day to look and see what is going on though I rarely post here much.
"If I had a nickel for every nickel I ever had, I'd have all my nickels back".
  • I was a collector around forty five years ago and thought i'd put something togeather again.
I've researched the market and there's no way i'd be that foolish.

Way back when, yes knowledge was the name of the game but today it's a fool and his money, lots of money.

I see people pay way way more than a coin is worth just because they can, then come on the forums and brag
about this great coin they own but never mention the fact that they spent a morons ransom for it.

Oh and don't get me started on the plastic industry.

    ........End of Rant........

Really, there is some very good informative reading here and there on the forums and I try to find them all.

What do I like? Well lets just say i've got a shoulder mounted buffalo on the wall here.

    I'm one too!! (a lurker)
Why?- because the only thing I am interested in NOW is 1836 coinage, and there are not that many posts that specific.
I have lots of other coins, but they are all pretty boring as they sit in their boxes, rolls, envelopes etc. waiting to tone. Unfortunately I live
in a high desert (Idaho), so it may take a few centuries for them to turn - and then I doubt any of them will end up like those
"NT" beauties that I see all over this board (and the one across the street).

I also chuckle a lot at all the "hoopla" over the modern stuff that gets so much attention these days, and the monstrous marketing machines
the mint and TPGs have become - "grading" hundreds/thousands of brand new bullion rounds DAILY, along with all the other junk the mint is pumping out.

I guess as long as they keep making money with these modern hype techniques - I'll keep lurking - and waiting for the big bubble to burst (again)!!

I haved lurked here for about 3 months and have decided to register and post for the first time tonight. I have collected since I was 7, but have collected on and off since high school. The last period of avid collecting for me was in the late 1980's. At that time, I used to hit large coin shows in the Balt-Wash area and enjoyed junk boxing and shopping for Lincoln's, Canadian LC's, US LC's, and seated dimes. Nowadays, I'm trying to focus on Barber coins, but I cannot resist snatching up random types that I like, for instance, Bust halfs. Now I just hit ebay and other auctions, but am itching to go to large shows again for what they offer (a chance to see coins before purchase and to talk with knowledgable dealers and collectors).

My recent ebay purchases have largely been lessons in learning what is an original coin, and just how many coins have been altered by rubbing, old-time polishing, etc., but they superficially look "original". It is discouraging to see the amount of deception on ebay in how coins are photographed. Different lighting schemes are used to make coins appear original or to hide hairlines. I also think that sometimes I've been the victum of shill bidding and am tryng to establish more dicipline in my bidding.

I have found most threads here to be interesting, even the discussions of coins way out of my reach, flame wars, grading threads, etc. The entire topic of grading is fascinating and am beginning to see the wiggle room among even the most well respected graders (PCGS, NGC, ANACS) with the more experience I gain. Ebay is rafe with overgrading. I often disagree with posters here about grading, either on items they have on ebay or in pictures posted here. Third world slabbers should be rounded up and shot. Crooks abound in this hobby just as much as they did 30 years ago when I'd get tossed out of coin shops for offering my advice to naive customers or would catch a dealer selling altered coins. Anyway, just some thoughts.

I think fear of posting on this forum is silly (who cares if some "dirtbag coin dealer" belittles you or your coins image) and will post again.
