I lurk because I can still have all the fun with none of the hassle. I have learned (and continue to learn) quite a bit from you folks. I've been leaning to the darkside lately because of prices in the US coin market. I also just seem to like the variety more. I still keep up with the US stuff though and am waiting for the new "Cherrypicker's Guide" to come out. Anyway, I'll post now and again and won't be a total stranger.

Come on fess up where did you get the Bromine and the Gallium from?
I was also trying to put together an elements collection. Gallium is particularly ellusive... that and i have a soft spot for liquid elements, orthose that turn to liquid at body temperature like Ga.
<< <i>I'm Jimmy and I've lurked here for far more than a year (maybe two or three). I don't post because I really don't collect coins. I read these boards (this one and the baseball card forum) daily because I find the personality clashes fascinating (and I love acquiring information about the historical aspects of our coinage).
The intolerance here is both extreme and entertaining. It's gotten to the point (both here and in our society) where people are not just intolerant of others' opinions (e.g. this coin is DCAM and not just CAM and you don't know what you're talking about if you think it is), but also of their likes and dislikes (e.g. modern collectors just don't know what they're doing). The vitriol and ad hominem attacks appeal to our basest sensibilities. I am guilty of chuckling at them, but I also find them sad.
So, even if you don't see me post for the next couple of years, trust that I will be reading, laughing, and shaking my head daily.

You need to post here more often, that's all there is to it. The other lurkers too. I agree so much with what you've said. There is a lot of entertainment value here. It's kind of a love hate thing with these boards sometimes. I love the pictures.
I have been following the board for a year. Do not feel the need to converse. The knowledge contained here is certainly worth the price of admission. If i felt my contributing would add anything, i would contribute. I have bought coins from ebay, heritage, teletrade, Bowers and Merena as well as online dealers. Perhaps in the near future i will do more than lurk.......
Hi, I have been lurking around these boards for about a year now. I guess the reasons for me not posting have been pretty well spelled out by others. The big one being that my knowledge in alot of the areas is lacking. I have seen many informative posts, and a wealth of knowledge displayed here that I return time and again hoping to gain knowledge. Icollect many different types of coins. They range from gold to clad, high grade certifieds to low grade raw. I pretty much collect what I like as long as I can afford it. At this time I am working on the design set without gold. I thank all that post so many informative items, and the occasionally humorous threads. I have bought several coins from some of the board members here and have nothing but good things to say about the experiences. There seems to be a lot of good people here, and I think this helps to grow intrest in the hobby. Jeff
Rumers have it that most lurkers don't post because they don't have anything positive to add! Who here wouldn't love to know the evil thoughts building up inside of these sideliners! C'mon lurkers, it's ok to disagree, open up, spill your guts, once you've made a fool of yourself, you'll keep coming back for more! The forums are something that you need to let grow on you before you get the hang of it! That's when the fun really begins! lol
Cheers, Leo

Hello, board members , my name is George aka GTS. I am a Saint Gaudens Double Eagle collector,I have collected , completed and last year sold my Kennedy proof set, Ike's with variety's business strikes and Ike proof set and also the Peace Dollar set MS64-66.,,, Oh and the American Silver Eagle both business strikes and Proofs,I traded all the above completed coins sets plus the 2003 American Gold Eagle 1oz.,1/2oz.,1/4o/z. and1/10oz.Proof set and the highly sought after 1995 Anniversary Proof set which includes the 1 oz Gold Eagle,1/2oz Gold Eagle,1/4oz Gold Eagle,1/10oz Gold Eagle and the $1Silver Eagle.Plus a dozen and a half Double Eagle Saints in MS63-64 for a very tough to find ( and even tougher to afford) 1920-S Double Eagle in MS63. So now I focus on collecting saints. I am learning so much from you guys about all kinds of other coins, the politics of submitting, Ebay edicate. A wonderfull mix of information and humor from a very diverse group of characters.I was told about these boards last summer by a friend from the registry but I didn't start lurkin till last month now i'm hooked.
HI, I really like reading all the great info from these boards. You guys have saved me loads of money. I was also able to get good info on "buys" like the P/D Buffalo set 2001( wish I bought more of them).I never registered till now because I never had anything I thought needed to be added. My Ike registry set is #63 (at last check) "Dave's Collection" Well back to the shadows, Thanks
I don't really have a lot to say, yet. Mostly I read other posts to see who knows what they are talking about (ie Russ on Kennedys), so I can learn more about the hobby.
Not a lurker...more of a drifter. I pass through here from time to time. Will read threads with interesting titles or about news events....but have no interest in whiny "my stuff didn't upgrade, bodybag, crackout, grade nitpicking" type threads. See ya. So, why don't I get any of those new fangled nickel designs in change?

Although I post, infrequently, I consider myself a lurker. The reasons why are too numerous to mention. Basically, I don't have a lot to add to the excellent points raised by most of the vets here. Also, I tend to collect only one primary area (classic silver commems) and a couple of secondary ones (US type gold and modern "crap") so the opps are limited for me to advance many discussions. I try to stay away from flame wars as well. All of these tend to keep me in the shadows.
I do want to thank everyone here who is a regular for so many of contributions to the board. What you have to say is meaningful and very helpful to all who read the forum. Someday, I hope to match your levels of expertise.
<< <i>Although I post, infrequently, I consider myself a lurker. >>
120 posts since 7-2001. I think you are a super lurker.
I agree with what you have said. Only so many things can be said if a person only collects one or two different coin designs. I imagine this type of person would sooner or later turn into a lurker/reader as I have done.
Is it safe to come out form the shadows?? Well, I guess I am more of a newbie than a certified lurker. Although, given the hours a day that I view these threads, my number of posts does not compare.
I only post when I have something to say. I don't want to be a thread killer or come off as over confident in the presence of such great people and numismatists. I do greatly appreciate all that I have learned and gathered from reading your countless threads. Thank You!
To keep it on topic: I am building a registry set of 1946-64 Roosevelt’s (only ms66 no FB) and I like to add to my Circ Barber dime and "V" nickel set when I have a few extra dollars.
I love this place...entertaining and educational. Don't even know how to post properly! I'm a very enthusiastic/passionate collector of NGC, PCGS and ANACS slabbed MS seated liberty quarters and those ---UGLY--- barber quarters. I have been lurking for years. Keep up the great work forum members!
It's really great to see all the lurkers here. There are always a few names on the "who's here" that one wonders whether they are coin guys or card guys.
I lurk and post in spurts (my average over 3 years is less than a post a day) ---My favorite threads are on ethical topics, grading Morgans and Bust halves--and, of course, the insane flame wars which erupt periodically. I also enjoy the threads centering on someone's outraged sensibilities which usually become inflamed. Mainly, I just enjoy the forum and don't always feel I have to say something (unless you count my periodic rants about 1804 dollars, 1913 nickels and other mint "fantasy pieces").
Being in the US Gov't witness protection program I am reluctant to contribute as I may be traced and my life be put at risk. Although, I do admit to buying raw Morgans on Ebay which is much more dangerous than having my past catch up with me. This forum has educated me about coin collecting and the discussions are priceless.
I found out 25 years ago while at my favorite bar that is was more fun to watch and listen to the drunks than to be one of the drunks- I have the same philosophy here ( not that I'm relating any posters to the drunks in my past) : I can learn a lot more reading and watching than by responding to every little tid-bit I read. BTW I collect mostly half cents , but unlike most of my EAC mates, I prefer to have mine slabbed (PCGS of course)
My name is David, I lurk to see fun things like Ebay ripoffs and who's buying what as far as toned coins. I currently work in the IT industry in proccessor testing (snore) but my true love is Anthropology. I collect mostly non certified moderns and put them in capital plastic set holders, but have the following in PCGS holders:
1979 and 1981 SBA Type 2's (Pr69dcam) <--too scary to buy raw. 1998 SMS Kennedy Half SMS MS69 1950-1955 Roosevelt dimes, Jefferson nickels PR67 (The rest from 56-on are raw) In NGC holders, I have a Pan Pac half MS64 and A MS66 Wisconsin and MS66 Bay Bridge. I also have a 2004 and 2005 Platinum half ounce eagle, proof, as well as 1992-to present silver proof sets (unopened)

A major difference between now and then is the internet's ability to transfer knowledge from forums like this to old beginners like me.
Why a lurker? With all the knowledge around here it is somewhat intimidating to make that first post.
