Oh my...is it a new name for the Savannah Scammer?
  • I guess I'll have to trust to luck--just won Ebay item #160045845250 at $90 for what looks like a VF20 1817 CBH. Can anyone link this and give opinions. It will fit my date set nicely if it is as shown.

Pay by paypal through your credit card. If you don't get what you paid for, you can reverse the charge.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

I hate to burst your bubble, but IMHO, the coin is heavily/harshly cleaned, and is not worth what you paid for it. Major grading services would probably body-bag this one.image

  • Ouch! But thanks for you honest feedback.

I don't think it's a bad pickup for the money. I've been looking at these more often lately for my 7070 type set.

I think it was probably cleaned long ago, but has since re-toned nicely...see LMV's thread about

Nice score! I like the coin on it's own merits, but that's O-103a, which is the punctuated date variety (later die state where the dot is gone). The dot between the 1 and 7 could still be there......hard to tell from the pics. Nonetheless you made a good purchase. Please let us know how it turns out.

  • Thanks!--I had a gut feeling I was OK. Didn't have my Overton handy and didn't think it was a punctuated date variety--the triple denticle below the bust is one diagnostic of the 103-a. So it's an R-3.

What I really like about the 1817 O-103 is that it is the only die marriage that shares the reverse die of the 1817/4. It is probably the closest that I will ever come to owning an 1817/4.....LOL.
