It's true that nobody's perfect, and we all make mistakes. But the behavior in question wasn't a mistake. It was something that he did repeatedly and defended seriously. No amount of numismatic genius can change that. An evil genius is still evil.
If you haven't noticed, I'm single and miserable and I've got four albums of bitching about it that I would offer as proof.
History will remember him as a numismatist, or not at all. There is no reason to remember a common criminal, once those who were directly affected are dead and gone.

There are many many examples of persons using institutions to prey on children. A common theme is years of repeated abuses and many missed opportunities to stop it. This should not be ignored just because you are a good coach, teacher, numismatist, priest or whatever.
I can understand the urge to put this particular topic to rest but the reality is there is more awareness now and its just not appropriate to ignore it.
You can't sum up a complex man, like Walter Breen, in one word. I have to use two.
TROUBLED GENIUS
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
I met him at a large coin show many years ago before his personal problems came out. I showed him a dime to determine what kind of RPM or OMM it was. He was different and wore a ty dye shirt, shorts and sandals. He tried to do too much to quick as far as coins go. A lot of the coins he list as rare in his book are not rare at all.
As fa as a person......well that has be stated in other reply's.

Second, as for Breen the numismatist - 'brilliant". As for Breen the human - "tragic".

Yeah, good reply. Oh by the way, Michael Jackson is human also, along with his many other problems.

LMAO.
His personal problems are uninteresting except as to explain why he died in prison.
