Draped Bust Half - Grade Revealed ** Elected to Pass ** Available at...

Hello,
I have this half on hold. I like the look and the price is high but not outrageous from the grade. Opinions and grade and appearance welcomed.
Decided to pass. Grade is PCGS XF40. Price is $1,495 at JJ Teaparty.

My guess (and I hope that I can learn more) is that the coin was dipped at one time and retoned. Since it's in a PCGS holder, the cleaning must have been gentle enough to remain market acceptable. I like it better than the gunmetal grey ones I have seen.

Nice coin.
I also think the coin has been cleaned in some way.If I gave it a grade,I'd call it a nice VF35.As far as the cost,I have no idea.
JMO,You asked.

very choice vf
Maybe someone will look up the Overton variety for you.
Looks like it has a great deal of eye-appeal. Draped bust halfs remain hot so it wouldn't be a surprise if this sold in the$1,000 to $1,500 range depending on the amount of luster remaining. Nice coin IMO.
PASS. too common to lower standards to that coin, unless your getting it at quite a discount off xf

<< <i>I like the look >>
And that's all that really matters. I make it a point to not knock what someone else likes. Now you ask my opinion, and I will say I do not like the look.
I know these are tougher than some might think to find more original looking. But I would wait for just that. Either way, if you like it, enjoy it.
I would imagine something like this isn't cheap though.
This particular coin looks like a choice VF to EF, appears to have been warshed off in the past and has been getting secondary toning. Have you seen it in hand? is there luster?
If it's priced "high for the grade" I'd probably pass, but if the coin speaks to you, well there you go.

I'd grade this piece AU-50, unless the luster I see in the letters and devices is the result of a cleaning. Many 1807 Bust half dollars are shallow strikes which makes them appear to have more wear than they really have.
I think that this is probably a nice coin, but it's not the type of look that many collectors are looking for today. Therefore I would not pay a premium for this piece within the grade.
<< <i>i net graded the coin choice vf+ due to the cleaning hairlines and unnatural brightness >>
Sorry Michael, but you are not going to buy a coin like that today at VF+ prices. Heck you couldn't buy them like it in the 1970s when I bought my piece. This one is now in an NGC AU-58 holder. Paramount coin graded it AU-50 when I bought it at auction 30+ years ago.
Am I really that old?
Edited to add: I usually agree closely with Bill on grades, but we're clearly on two different pages with this one.
<< <i> there is heavy wear on Liberty's hair behind the eye. >>
Most of that is not wear. The coin was struck that way. Look at the 1806 I posted, which pulled an AU-58. That coin has about 75% of the luster remaining.
If this is the kind of look you are attracted to and you are comfortable with the price then by all means buy it. However, I dislike the coin strongly, believe it has very little life and originality to it and would not welcome it in my collection.
