1846 Dahlonega - Opinions?

To all the old golders here and anyone else who has an opinion. What do you think of this piece? Grade, Originality, etc.

Based on the picture, I like it. I am not sure if it is lighter in person, though. It should grade AU-58 at NGC, and AU-55 at PCGS.

It's a 46-D/D, very original, choice AU, and I love it.

Thanks RYK, I know you are an avid collector of these (an understatement). Any major concerns with the hit on the base of the neck? Will it affect the TPG's opinion such as knocking it down a grade or two?

Collecting southern gold is about making compromises. A few stray marks here and there are of little concern to me. What counts most, for me, is originality and the overall eye appeal, which is excellent. (Send DW my regards

It is currently housed in an NGC AU 50 holder that doesn't list the D/D variety attribution. I was thinking on having it reholdered and asking for an upgrade. Do you think I should send it in raw or in the slab? NGC or PCGS?

I think the coin definitely has upgrade potential.

Based on the photo, that's a lock for a significant upgrade.

The coin is an "old time" EF-45. The surfaces are a little scruffy, but there is mint surface in the letters and devices. The coin is 100% original with the kind of general look that experienced collectors like. Given the current grading standards I'm sure that this piece will make it into an AU holder. It might not make AU-58 at NGC however if they don't get a chance to send it NCS to be "restored."

Under no circumstances should like NCS get their hands on this coin! All they will do is screw it up. In the long run the value of this coin will be enhanced if it is left alone.

Great looking 46-D/D. If it looks as original in hand I would certainly welcome it in my collection as AU55.
