How far can you get with $1 million?

MrEurekaMrEureka Posts: 24,729 ✭✭✭✭✭
This small bronze horse is one of an edition of six. It was produced in 1951 and is estimated to bring over $1 million on October 16. For the same amount of money, what would you get in rare coins?

With a million dollars, I safely get $40,000 a year, inflation-adjusted, for life. Nice "pension" there.

Maybe the nicest looking 1795 eagle and half eagle I could afford with the million. If I had any left over, a party to celebrate my "newps."

Andy, Can I have the horse instead?

I would melt the small bronze horse, use the metal to make several hundred smaller bronze replicas from the original bronze horse, box them up pretty, add a pretty COA with a good story and double my money. Of course I would also get a killer mailing list that I would use to offer more cool bronze horse items to my customers. Maybe Id even make a short movie on on how we melted the horse for our future Tv ads to sell the Replicas of The Original Replicas..The possibilties are endless..

    Thank u vedy much- image

Hmm... I could probably get a complete set of Assay Commission medals (by date, variety, and metal), and have enough money leftover to get a complete variety set of 1793 half cents in uncirculated. Could probably also get all the 1836-49 small date proofs also, at least a date set if not varieties.

Yeah, and assuming 5% interest constant for life, in 14 years at 4% inflation your 50K would have the buying power of 25K.

image See? This is whyI dislike "fine art". If you'd told me it was 3,000 years old or had been found on the moon, I'd could see the $1 million estimate. The freaking things a 50 year old doorstop!

If I'd made it (and the quality is right up there with my talent) I could probably sell them for scrap metal.

A million bucks for coins? I'd like a Strawberry Leaf cent, 1974 Alumium cent, and a complete pattern proof set in aluminum. And I'd still probably have enough money to park in metals.

    "fine art" grrrrrrrrrrr.

I could also complete my 50 coin set of Liberty Seated half dimes in the grade range I'm shooting for.

Look on the bright side. For a million bucks, it could certainly make one expensive self defense weapon if someone broke into your house. Whap Whap!

Who needs clever inventions to make a million bucks? Just make a couple of seeminly crudely made bronze horseys! Seems that it would take much less intellectual thought and you could retire comfortably on the return. imageimageimage

For $1,000,000 you could buy a 2 bedroom, 1 bath fixer upper on 1/7 acre in Silicon Valley.

I'd probably donate about $150,000 to the Democratic National Party, $150,000 to the Republican National Party, split $100,000 4 ways among the top 2 Presidential runners in each party (yes, I realize I'd have to set up a PAC of some sort), split another $100,000 amongst about 10 House committee Chairs/Minority Chairs (who will all be re-elected anyhow with gerrymandering) and then lobby for something I want, be it property or laws etc., that will be worth over $100,000,000 to me. Just ask any mega-corporation, that's how it's done. Use $400,000 of the rest for seed money for the given project. Take the other $100,000 and put it into 1 or 2 nice Draped Bust Heraldic Eagle coins for something to look at while the $100,000,000 is being generated. Then when you get the $100,000,000 you could do and buy some really interesting stuff.

You can withdraw much more annually at that rate (or any realistic rate), subject to inflation and increasing with inflation annually if the model is one where your take the interest plus some principle with the goal of zero nest egg after N (like 40) years.

A quick back of the envelope computation gives the first withdrawal as (G**N)/[(1 - G**(N-1))/(1 - G) - 1] times the initial principle. G is the ratio B/A, where A is inflation (1.032 for 3.2%) and B is appreciation (1.05 for 5%). The M-th year's withdrawal would be the first year's time A**(M-1); for instance an increase of 1.032**9, or nearly 33% higher, in the tenth year.

Life isn't forever, so a reasonably conservative estimate can allow for more liberal spending of the nest egg.

Why all the negativity in the followup posts? The original question didn't imply any disrespect towards the sculptor... Marini's work is not much different from a rare coin; it serves as a storage of value. It is socially acceptable, pleasant, and convenient. The owner held it for 9 years, probably enjoyed it, and is planning on selling it at a profit to some other wealthy fan of Italian equestrian sculpture. No big deal.

I haven't chosen how I plan on spending my million yet... Its just that the irony of comments like "But its just a hunk of shaped metal!" almost blew out my hypocrisy meter. image

Statue reminds me of an episode from the TV show "The Rockford Files". Except there was a similar sized bronze statue of a bird where there were 3 or 4 known originals. It went for big money on the show which featured an auction.
