I can say both, but I suspect most members have done both.

The only slab I ever cracked was a 1894 Morgan in an ACG.

I've never even seen a bottle of dip........

Accidentally, dropped and cracked an old ANACS slab. The coin is still in it though.
Never dipped but brought up dates chemically on Buffalo nickels as a kid.

I can think of no good reason off hand to dip a coin... guilty of cleaning modern coins with baking soda many years ago, but I have never dipped.

Thought about cracking slabs, but the only slabs I would buy are ones I would not want to attempt to crack. So, I've never done that either.

Never, ever dipped a coin.......and never will either! But, did crack out a 1921 Merc I won on eBay that I did not know was slabbed. Graded at vg, I cracked it out to put into my whitman Merc album. Looks nice in there too!!

I can honestly say that I have never cleaned, dipped or otherwise chemically treated any coin. I cannot, however, say with a straight face that I have never cracked a coin out of a slab. The knee deep shards of broken plastic all over my shop floor would certainly give me away. I break out every coin that I have ever purchased in a slab, and will continue to do so.

I have cooked, fried (literally), chemically exposed, tooled, holed and etched countless coins.

I have never submitted to a grading service nor sold any of the coins I have subjected to any of the conditions stated above and never will.

I have never done either, however there are a couple of coins just begging to be cracked and re-submitted. We will seee if I ever have the nerve to do it.

I fail to understand!

Everyone should take some common 1964 circulated and AU grade silver coins and "abuse" them by dipping in different homemade and commercial solutions and chemicals as well as scrubbing with baking soda, etc. just to learn the effects of such treatment on such coins.

Also horrors, whizz a circulated silver coin as well as brillo clean a common circulated coin just to see what happens.

Do this at coin club meetings or coin collecting friends houses so that everyone sees it all at one time.

Also abusing some common copper cents will be very informative as well.

Doing so makes for a more educated coin collector!

I've dipped numerous fugly toned Morgans covered in colors of puke slime and they all retoned in their standard
paper flips to be nice attractive examples..

However, MOST of my coins are ONLY dipped in pure alcohol to remove active organics (PVC) plus to
generally get the grains of dirt removed, so that dirt can't scratch delictate surfaces.

--99.95 % Pure Ethel alcohol--you local drugstore can order it for you, or a chemical supply house has it too.
Helps if you doctor-coin collector friend gives you a prescription - just so there's no questions. Or most
drag stips have it also. Careful where it's stored.

Cracked out a buttload of NGC and ANACS coins to make into PCGS coins. Only dipped one coin in an acetone bath to get rid of a little PVC in the reeding.

Never done anything of the sort, and never ever plan to. A coin is as good as it comes and nothing else. Also, a slab protects the coin and I would love to have all my coins protected.

Never had the need to dip a coin in the past.

I have probably cracked over a hundred slabs with PCGS, NGC and ANACS included in the rubble.

I don't see the need to crack em' out anymore. I accomplished the goal that I was after.

I have never dipped a coin, nor cracked a slab..... the reasons for those activities go beyond collecting - as does cosmetic surgery for young ladies.... it becomes an ego thing. I collect coins because they intrigue me, and I acquire those that interest me the most. I do not collect to build my own self importance or to flaunt status to others. Cheers, RickO

Guilty, but not very often.

I've done a lot more slab cracking than dipping. I have not dipped a coin in over 10 years. I just avoid buying stuff that needs it.

I don't know about your family, but the individuals who will be in control of the sale of my estate are not unethical scammers and know enough about coins that they wouldn't. In fact, they probably wouldn't sell them at all, unless for some reason they couldn't collect on my life insurance.

I purchased a AT Ike from Ebay and I soaked it in olive oil to remove the burnt smell. Someone told me this would work, it did. I cracked out an IGC nickel to submit to PCGS. Got the same grade. Not into to cracking or dipping, more important things to do with my coins like admire them.

I've certainly cracked out a few coins to keep in albums, and as far as altering surfaces goes, I've only done it a couple of times as experiments on coins that were already ruined by cleanings and corrosion.

I wonder how many around here can say this?
