Paul Green, RIP

I don't have much information, but I've been told that long-time writer for Numismatic News, Paul Green, passed away Monday, August 21, at his home in Costa Rica. When he lived near Madison, Wisconsin in the late 1980's, Paul and I co-wrote a book about baseball cards. He later moved to Key West, Florida, then to Costa Rica, and usually had an interesting coin "profile" piece in most issues of Numismatic News.

Paul Green was one of the good guys of the hobby.

I didn't know him but I read his stuff in NN all the time. Condolences to his family and friends.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

That is very sad news! I just finished reading his recent article in Numismatic News about the 150th anniversary of the 1856 Flying Eagle Cent. Costa Rica? I was wondering why I never met him at shows.

This is sad and unexpected news, indeed. His many columns in Newmismatic News
and elsewhere were always of the highest caliber. His writings about the coins of
Central America and Costa Rica were among his finest.

He will be sorely missed in numismatics.

Very sad news. I'm heartened by the fact that he was probably living in his dream home doing dream things that only most of us think about when we retire. He lived it. Good for him. I'm sure his family will be heartened by the glad tidings in this forum.

Horrible news. We just lost all one of our best numismatic resources. Very sad indeed.

I will miss his articles and stories of days gone by.

  • Sad News - he was a real asset to the hobby. Can recall he wrote great articles in Coinage Magazine circa the late 1960's to the present day.

Paul Green was a great numismatic writer who could discuss any topic without "talking down" to his readers. We will miss him. Our condolances to his family and friends.

  • Sounds like he had a pretty good life to me ... I love Costa Rica image
  • Yes, his articles were very good. Hopefully there are some finished articles already in the pipeline that will still be published.

Truly sad - I always read his articles in NN. He could explain the most complicated coin terms in layman's terms and without condescencion. A big loss to the hobby and the polar opposite of the JP Sarosi's of this world.

  • Just found out about Paul Greens passing. I am very sad. He was a fantastic numismatic writer. I enjoyed all of his articles and his pick of the week in NN was the main reason I subscribed to that publication. Will miss him. Hope he had a great life.
