I need your help! I thought this coin was very cool and I need your opinion!! UPDATE!

MadMartyMadMarty Posts: 16,697 ✭✭✭
Sometimes you see a coin that just says BUY ME!, I'm different. I have seen plenty of Columbian Halves, but this one has Cameo! The fields are mirror like (the photo doesn't pick them up well). I would love your opinion on the coin!! Did I buy a winner, or screw the pooch?

Well the coin is now at NGC, talked to Rick this morning and the coin is not a proof. It will slab and should be done next week!!

It's a nice coin I saw a few of these here in Atl.. Is there any toning on it besides the rim?

Get your hands on a copy of Labstain's "Certified Commemorative Coins". Covers all of the early Half Commems. My recollection is that there actually was a very small issue of Proofs of this. Found it... p.122: "A small number of certified commems have been designated as P/L on their holders by NGC(PCGS does not denote this for commems). " "...27 of the 144 issues have P/L/ examples and , of these, only nine have had more than ten pieces graded." "Three issues-1892 and 1893 Columbian Expositions and New Rochelle have had more P/L/'s certified than all others combined." Obviously most P/L commems are very scarce."

MadOne, there were about 100 proofs struck. That strike is hammered and similar to the one other proof I have seen. I do not know any specific diagnostics for the proof other than they used different planchets and were struck twice. With that said, there are many PL Cameo regular strikes too. It is very hard to get one of these in a proof holder, but yours clearly appears at least PL.

It is terrible. Definately not a proof. Wasn't there someone here who swore they had a proof? The services disagreed.

Now, just PM me your price and I'm a buyer. I'm just trying to help and get this artifically frosted POS off the market...

(think anybody will believe me? i don't)

Hey Marty - I am a serious buyer if you are a seller! I think it is a neat coin.

Hey Marty- that is a nice coin. I have never seen one of these guys in a proof, although I have also heard that they are as sharp as this one. Sure looks PL and I would put more than 50/50 odds that this one may go Pr 63CAM
    I sure hope so.image

I say you did well. I'd be worried about overdipping, but provided there's more luster than is showing in the MartyVision photo, it looks to be a superb coin...Mike

    one word ... WOW!!!

    imageimage

while looking at the first pictures I see a very nice, definately PL example, which in and of itself is a major score

while studing the second, enlarged picture, I think I see it, but am not sure ... could it be? The more I look the more I think it could be ... man I'd love to see this piece in hand ... I'm going out on a limb ... it's coming back as a proof

Does anyone have the markers for a proof??
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

The 100 or so proofs were given out to dignataries. They were struck multiple times so had excellent strikes with squared off features and so forth. They had very reflective mirror like fields. The devices were brilliant. I don't believe they were minted to produce the cameo look your coin has.

If you have seen a brilliant proof Morgan and compared it to a proof like Morgan you can tell the proof from the biz strike by the quality of the surfaces and strike. Often proof like Morgans have more cameo contrast than proof Morgans. The proofs have smooth fields that look like a pool of water you can dive into. The same thing is going on here. This is a business strike coin.

Naturally this is my opinion. I have only seen photos of proof Columbians and am not an expert. I don't think you will be convinced unless you get one of the services to look at it.

I don't think the coin I have is a proof, I think it's a damned nice PL though! One of the other board members PM about the markers for a proof, that is why I asked.

    It says 1892 NOT 1992

Does that mean it is not one of those moderns?

Marty, will that coin be back next week for James to bring to the showimage
