Anybody else having trouble finding tape for registered mail?
I guess most everybody who submits to PCGS via registered mail now knows that the USPS requires the paper tape that has to be pre-moistened, instead of the previous self-adhering packing tape. I have about 1/3 left of a very large roll that I found about 8 years ago at a business supply store that was going out of business - they rummaged around in the back and sold it to me for a buck!
None of the office supply chains around here carry that type of tape, and neither the USPS nor PCGS offer it for sale. I can purchase multiple rolls through my business via a shipping supplies vendor, but they require a 6 or 8 roll purchase - enough to last me about 3 lifetimes or more....I'm wondering if anybody else would be interested in splitting an order with me. If we get 3 or 4 folks who are looking for a roll, I can get it to you at cost. Send a PM if interested. I will also post on BST - maybe I should have done that first, but this forum seems to be a bit more active.

I agree. The tape doesn't have to be the type that has to be moistened... just paper type that can be stamped by the post office. I have a roll of paper packing tape(self adhesive) that I've used to ship registered mail packages with no problems.

<< <i>I just let the postal clerks tape it for me when mailing Registered. They've never ever said a word or given me a dirty look, not even the mean clerks. Seems they expect to do it. >>
I really like my USPS clerks. They always ask me about my daughter. They also offer to fix up any issue I may have with my packaging, including adding tape to registered mail and so on. They are the best!
And, I've asked at least 3 different offices about getting my hands on the tape, an not one clerk offered to tape a box for me, or even mentioned that they could. When I first started getting flak about the self-adhesive tape, I just avoided that particular p.o. - but then every office I frequent around town turned down the boxes if they had self-adhesive tape on them...maybe my picture is on the wall?
For those who are still able to use self-adhesive tape - be ready - I think the rule is going to trickle down throughout the system...I got away with it for a couple of times, but can't seem to get it by them any longer.
Remember about 15 years ago, when the new postmaster general claimed that the post office was gonna change ways and treat every body cheerfully and go out of there way to provide customer service? What happened to that?
Ps - I do have to admit that there are about 5 clerks that I have a good, friendly relationship with, enjoy talking to, and will go out of my way to deal with, if possible. But none of them ever offered to tape a box for me.....

<< <i>I know this isn't B/S/T or the Giveaway forum, but if someone needs some tape like the roll on eBay that Cladiator put in his reply, please PM me. My wife ordered a roll and got a case in instead. Like 25 rolls of it.

Jerry, there's a guy in this thread who needs some. Maybe you can get together.

to packaging registered mail ..and God help you if ever a registered package gets "lost" as you have to prove that the coin you sent was worth x amount of dollars .
Christ , some of the postmasters will insist not only that the Value be proven -but also they
want proof
that the coin was "really" in the package !!
Now how on earth would that be " provable" ?

The Post Office gives me rolls of the registered tape. They also asked us to start using a registered mail log book, which they gave us along with a roll of red labels with bar codes. I was told that self adhesive tape is NOT permitted. I have shipped packages with the self adhesive tape in the past without problem, but I think that they are going to start inforcing that rule.

I'd never spend my time taping stuff at the Post Office. It's too risky. I show up with the package sealed properly, and the forms filled out.
The clerk proceeded to whip out her self-stick brown tape and put that stuff over my good tape!!
I agree with Superlardcoins, you are going to be at the mercy of the whims of whatever clerk you happen to get. The lack of standardization at USPS is amazin'!

If you want to save a buck or if you run out of roll tape you might try this:
Save your brown shopping or grocery bags or buy some cheap brown wrapping paper and some stick glue. Cut the brown paper into strips and stick-glue it over the seams and corners of Registered Packages. I dunno for sure, but if it's neat looking they may accept that. I know from experience that stick glue welds paper and holds much better than "lick-tape"!
