Anybody else having trouble finding tape for registered mail?

I guess most everybody who submits to PCGS via registered mail now knows that the USPS requires the paper tape that has to be pre-moistened, instead of the previous self-adhering packing tape. I have about 1/3 left of a very large roll that I found about 8 years ago at a business supply store that was going out of business - they rummaged around in the back and sold it to me for a buck!
None of the office supply chains around here carry that type of tape, and neither the USPS nor PCGS offer it for sale. I can purchase multiple rolls through my business via a shipping supplies vendor, but they require a 6 or 8 roll purchase - enough to last me about 3 lifetimes or more....I'm wondering if anybody else would be interested in splitting an order with me. If we get 3 or 4 folks who are looking for a roll, I can get it to you at cost. Send a PM if interested. I will also post on BST - maybe I should have done that first, but this forum seems to be a bit more active.

LOL, he didn't say anything about needing it to be cheap haha
  • I know this isn't B/S/T or the Giveaway forum, but if someone needs some tape like the roll on eBay that Cladiator put in his reply, please PM me. My wife ordered a roll and got a case in instead. Like 25 rolls of it.

  • HMMMM - my Staples doesn't stock it any longer, but maybe we can all help out Mrs. Wiggly and take a roll or 2 off of her hands.....

I agree. The tape doesn't have to be the type that has to be moistened... just paper type that can be stamped by the post office. I have a roll of paper packing tape(self adhesive) that I've used to ship registered mail packages with no problems.

    Go to OfficeMax.com & search on 07014866.

YES! The only store I've found it at Staples- my local OfficeMax and Office Depot do not stock it. I even asked my local Post Office, and they said they needed some and had great difficulty locating itimage

I just let the postal clerks tape it for me when mailing Registered. They've never ever said a word or given me a dirty look, not even the mean clerks. Seems they expect to do it.
  • Go to Staples. Even if they do not carry it they will overnight it to you free of any shipping charges!
    That was EASY...

image Wow! Where do you live? Happy-Happy Town?
  • I ordered mine from Office Depot online. If I order enough (I always do) I get free delivery.

I really like my USPS clerks. They always ask me about my daughter. They also offer to fix up any issue I may have with my packaging, including adding tape to registered mail and so on. They are the best!

Geez - Some of you must have your postal clerks taking Prozac! I just sent a pacakage Saturday, and you would have thought I was handing them live grenade. The typical response is "Do you REALLY want to send this registered???" When I explain it's the only way the recipient will accept delivery, they reluctantly rotate the box several times, looking for that one seam that I have left uncovered, then mutter at how hard it is to stamp every taping seam with the seal.
And, I've asked at least 3 different offices about getting my hands on the tape, an not one clerk offered to tape a box for me, or even mentioned that they could. When I first started getting flak about the self-adhesive tape, I just avoided that particular p.o. - but then every office I frequent around town turned down the boxes if they had self-adhesive tape on them...maybe my picture is on the wall?image

For those who are still able to use self-adhesive tape - be ready - I think the rule is going to trickle down throughout the system...I got away with it for a couple of times, but can't seem to get it by them any longer.

Remember about 15 years ago, when the new postmaster general claimed that the post office was gonna change ways and treat every body cheerfully and go out of there way to provide customer service? What happened to that?

Ps - I do have to admit that there are about 5 clerks that I have a good, friendly relationship with, enjoy talking to, and will go out of my way to deal with, if possible. But none of them ever offered to tape a box for me.....

  • I use the reinforced tape required. It is the kind pictured by Cladiator which I have to wet with my tape sponge I keep in a dish by my desk. I try to learn and follow the regulations. I always smile and am there several times a week. I am a regular. They call me by name. image

Search google for a company called Shuretape. They have a toll free phone # and can tell you where the product is available in your area. Ask for FP96 or FP97 tape. It may have to be purchased by the case, but I split an order with a buddy of mine-24 rolls for $95-enough to last a lifetime.

image At the price for registered mail and also this years increases, they can supply 3 cents worth of tape.
Luck happens when preparation meets opportunity.
  • ..i have found over the years that it's basicly up to the whims of the clerks as to whats right and whats unacceptable when it comes

to packaging registered mail ..and God help you if ever a registered package gets "lost" as you have to prove that the coin you sent was worth x amount of dollars .

Christ , some of the postmasters will insist not only that the Value be proven -but also they

    want proof

that the coin was "really" in the package !!

Now how on earth would that be " provable" ?

  • The Post Office gives me rolls of the registered tape. They also asked us to start using a registered mail log book, which they gave us along with a roll of red labels with bar codes. I was told that self adhesive tape is NOT permitted. I have shipped packages with the self adhesive tape in the past without problem, but I think that they are going to start inforcing that rule.

If you want to find lots of online places to buy tape, search for "kraft tape" I can't find any in the town that I live in. Staples doesn't carry it here.

I get the stuff from Staples or Office Max. Sometimes I've had to do a special order.

I'd never spend my time taping stuff at the Post Office. It's too risky. I show up with the package sealed properly, and the forms filled out.

  • Afew days ago, I take in a nice package taped nicely with the wettable craft tape.

The clerk proceeded to whip out her self-stick brown tape and put that stuff over my good tape!!

I agree with Superlardcoins, you are going to be at the mercy of the whims of whatever clerk you happen to get. The lack of standardization at USPS is amazin'!

The Post Office let me have a roll of brown "lick-tape". When that runs out Office Depot will see me looking for a replacement roll.

If you want to save a buck or if you run out of roll tape you might try this:
Save your brown shopping or grocery bags or buy some cheap brown wrapping paper and some stick glue. Cut the brown paper into strips and stick-glue it over the seams and corners of Registered Packages. I dunno for sure, but if it's neat looking they may accept that. I know from experience that stick glue welds paper and holds much better than "lick-tape"!
