Mature adult and newbe

Just wanted to say hello. 78 yrs here. Started collecting Lincoln pennies in 1942 when I worked at a service station. Since then collected off and on. I have been lurking for awhile and learned a lot. My grandfather also gave me a coin, an 1880 5$ Liberty, and admonished me never to sell it and I would never be broke. I kept it and recently had it graded and encapsulated. It is AU55. I have never been broke!!!

I got suckered into coin collecting with this same line when I was about 5 years old: "admonished me never to sell it and I would never be broke"

Except mine was a 1922 peace dollar....I got screwed!!!!

    What series do you collect?

  • I have a 50 page pamphlet entitled "United States Rare Coin Value Guide" Issued by Henry L. Writesel Director of The Federal Coin Exchange of Columbus, Ohio. I bought this in about 1942. To give you an idea of value then ,they have, on the front, pictured an1804 Silver Dollar with a value of $500 to $2000.

On the 15th of every month PCGS turns on the icon function of the forums. You can then upload images to use as your icon next to your name. I think it'd be cool to use the 1880 5$ your gramps gave you as your icon.

Welcome to the forums. It is a great place to learn about coins.

When you started collecting in 1942 did you per chance buy any proof coins or sets from 1936-1942? If so, how much did they cost when you bought them? Quite a bit less than what they sell for today.
