My sister-in-law stopped by. She works in a drug store and said that an old man bought a newspaper with a coin which she's never seen before. It turned out to be a 1944 Walking Lib in F condition. She gave it to me. I told her to put aside any more halves he brings in so that she can gain the benefit of having them. I've heard stories of older people falling on hard times and spending silver coins they saved from the past.
  • Too bad, I did not receive any.

I would never have expected to answer this thread, as I never expected to receive any numismatic items as gifts, but sometimes surprises can come from the most unexpected of sources.

I have maintained a corresponding relationship, particularly at Christmas time, with the widow of good friend and mentor Russ Logan, co-author of the books on the early Federal dimes and half dimes, since his tragic and untimely death in 2002. Just two days ago, I received a nice Christmas card from her, bringing me up to date on what is happening with her and her family. Enclosed with the card was a Capped Bust half dime that she found while going through Russ' desk which she wanted me to have. It is an AU example of the 1829 LM-6.2/V5, an R5 marriage. Much to my surprise, it is the plate coin from "The Federal Half Dimes 1792 - 1837" for that marriage, shown on page 148, easily identifiable by some light grafitti on the obverse above Miss Liberty's cap. I presently own an AU-58 example of this die marriage, which is somewhat nicer than this specimen, but this coin will hold a special place in my collection for the memories, the friendship, and for the knowledge that Russ so unselfishly imparted. I was very touched by the gesture, and most appreciative for the privilege of having known such incredibly fine people. Thank you, Brenda.

No coins for Christmas. Good news is I`ll be going to my first FUN show. Even better news is I`ll be looking for an Hawaiian which will be #49 with just the Isabella left to finish. Something I never thought I would do!!! Nice Hawaiians in both the ANR and Heritage autions.

Becky / DorkGirl---Your CBH and TD look perfect for the grade. It's a miracle that they circulated that long without picking up any marks or any other problems. image

I received a collection of Peace Dollars (minus the 1928) from my mother.

For the last several months I have been concentrating on Peace Dollars. My mother wanted to add to my coin collection but knew better than to try and buy them herself. She gave me a budget, I selected the set, she paid for them. Super gift!!!

    I got three presents:

    1. Grade results from PCGS at the end of the day Dec. 23 on five raw Morgan VAMs... two were right what I expected and three were higher! image

    2. That same night one of the good guy dealers on these boards PM'd me that the 1570 Scotland Ryal "Sword Dollar" he had on consignment from a friend in England finally graded at PCGS (VF35) and was ready for me. image

    3. A Priority Mail package arrived Dec. 24 with my winning lot in the Heritage Baltimore auction: an 1895-S Morgan ANACS AU53 that looks correct to me! image
    When in doubt, don't.

What is money, in reality, but dirty pieces of paper and metal upon which privilege is stamped?
  • No coins image

But I did get Q. David Bowers new book, "The Expert's Guide to Collecting and Investing in Rare Coins". It promises that I can invest hundreds and make thousands! I haven't got to that part yet, still in the introductory stuff. It's very chatty.

No way. That makes you a coin snob, and there is no way the other coin snobs will let you into their club. And to top it off, there is no way you could have gotten that for Christmas. People like you are always on Santa's naughty list.image

Generally I wouldn't want friends/family picking out coins since they are not collectors and I hate to think of them getting taken for a ride. I asked for and got the Red Book Guide to Type collecting as well as the Dansco Walking Liberty Shortset. Mom also threw (shagrin) a proof 62 Franklin from Publisher Clearinghouse (gag) and they were kind enough to throw in a proof Kennedy (80-S I think) which I put in my type book. Hope to get David Lange's recently republished book on Mercury Dimes from my dad this upcoming weekend. I have Lange's book on Buffalo's which has been an invaluable resource.
