That would be E, they're 4 things in the first post image

But I agree with the sentiments there... but, I think the massive amount of knowledge that is freely shared is even more impressive than anything in that list.

  • I like waiting for the oppurtune moment and then mercilessly picking the brain on one of the many expert collectors and dealers that are members here. I hope to one day know enough to have my brain picked. Do you folks realize the amount of numismatic knowledge freely circulating here? It's absolutely astonishing.
  • This place has all other forums beat hands down ,there is more knowledge about coins here than any other website I have seen.I will be a member here as long as I am collecting and I hope that is a long time.I would also like to thank those who help myself and others on this board, they don't have to share thier knowledge but they do and that means alot to me, as I'm sure it means alot to others on these boards also. Thanks Tom T. image

An unwritten code of ethics most hold in high esteem, laced with cynicism, sarcasm, some of the funniest people I've ever had the pleasure to laugh at and with... and then this WEALTH of Knowledge and vastness of opinions...... Yeah, I like the "free for all" kind of First Ammendment rights we get to practice here.
  • H.......all of the above.

Amen to everything that has been said so far.... image

I've grown dependent on the CU forum for all the latest numismatic news. Also the depth of knowledge within the forum is priceless. This is the place for anyone who wants a crash course on numismatics.

Recently, the forum alerted me to the problems with eBay's Rafael Rios and save me headaches and a few bucks. I had won one of his auctions and simply did not pay after all the negative forum attention.

Yeah, what 3cent said...and it is kind of like a pacifier for when you can't buy a coin. If the buks aren't there at the moment and you wish you could pull the trigger but can't without severe penalties...just come to the forum and look at other people's newps for a while. If you can't find what you want and have the buks but there isn't one to buy...just come to the forum and look at other people's newps, maybe post some grumpiness. If you're in a good situation where you have the buks, find the coin, and pulled the trigger...come to the forum and post your newp for some of the folks that are in one of the first two predicaments. It goes around.

I'm repeating a lot of what's been said, but in the spirit of the season...

This is a very special place for coin collectors. The level of expertise runs the gamut from those just getting into the hobby all the way to incredibly knowledgable numismatists and specialists, and information is freely shared with all. I hope people realize that to read and heed the information available here can not only keep you from wasting a great deal of your hobby funds, but add immeasurably to your enjoyment of collecting.

It's like having hundreds of mentors at your beck and call! You can see great photos of breathtaking coins that most people never have a chance to see in person. Beyond that, getting to know some people here has given me the opportunity to see some things in person which would never have happened otherwise, from both collectors and dealers.

You can hear opposing viewpoints on issues and they are almost always reasoned arguments, not simply a "You're wrong"/"No, I'm right" exchange.

Beyond the numismatic knowledge, there is also a steady stream of hobby news that's up to the minute. Also, it's a remarkably "commercial-free" board. People respect the difference between this board and the Buy/Sell/Trade forum.

And while I dare not name names in fear of overlooking someone inadvertently, I greatly appreciate those of you who contribute much more than you probably get in return. Thanks very much for sharing. Without this board, I never would have heard the compliment "You're not a monkey" from a prominent dealer. image

I've gotten acquainted with a number of board members who are just good people. My personal enjoyment of the hobby has increased a hundredfold since I found this place.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I really like the wealth and breadth of numismatic knowledge that is shared here. Many of the members here are experts in their fields. And I like the opportunity to see great pics of some very beautiful and or rare coins. Prior to my participation on the forum my collecting was a very private and individual activity. I have made many collector friends through my participation here and it has really made my collecting much more enjoyable.

However, I must disagree with the OP on his first two points. I believe that the discussions about world ecomony and precious metals as well as the ebay witch hunts only detract from the purpose of this forum..which is US Coins. My personal opinion is both of those topics should be moved to the Open Forum.

I love seeing the genuine curiosity about numismatics here. Some of y'all are real sponges for info.

Of course, I also like the fact that numismatic news seems to break here first, i.e. the discovery of two new bust half varieties, etc.
  • BECOKABECOKA Posts: 16,961 ✭✭✭
Love it all. There is something for everyone newbies and experts alike. It's just fun.
  • I appreciate the generous sharing of knowledge.

I REALLY LIKE the sharing of photos.

It is fun to learn more about coins and the people who collect them.

I like the heads up on scammers and problems. I think it is uber cool when people spot the same coin in different auctions/holders or other interesting situations.
  • I appreciate the forum as a place to learn more than I could from any book and learn it from people who have "been there and done that."
I really enjoy when others post pictures of their coins, proofs, circs, varieties... etc.
I have learned more in here in the past 6 months than I had learned about coins in my whole 37 years.

A big thanks to all who post in here!
