Who "enjoys" their coins most? One-at-a-timers or open checkbooks?

What do you think? Is the enjoyment more if you can buy entire collections or if you add singly as affordable?

We all think the grass is greener. Is it?

    One at a time for me. The anticipation of finding the next nice coin for my collection is part of what keeps me in this hobby. I want it to be my collection, not someone else's collection I now own because I bought in "bulk."
    Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

    I am finding it tougher and tougher to find commems that have the "look" that I like. When I first started collecting these treasures, I was much less particular, just as long as it had toning and original surfaces. As with most of us, funds and resources are certainly limited so I am being very careful in my search for the coins that I will never get tired of looking at. So my answer to this thread question is... one at a time and BE SELECTIVE.image

    Some people collect complete sets like other people collect coins. Is there really any difference?

    Russ - my checkbook is currently closed. I am mystified at how $1M is chump change in this market anymore. I have no problem throwing $100k at the right coin, but apparently that figure is now increased by a factor of ten.

    Probably the folks who work at it the most, regardless of the amount spent, enjoy it the most. You can work just as hard spending 10K on a collection as 1M.

    If it all comes too easily, it won't mean very much to you.

    That's the down side of buying modern coins as a set. The upside is that you often get the coins in set form for less money than when you purchase them one at a time.
    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    While the "open checkbook" approach would be great fun for awhile, the satisfaction would eventually fade. I like the satisfaction of the hunt which includes the right price in many instances.
