Seeking opinions on value range on a coin contest?

I have a number in mind that I feel it's worth. The closest to guess the number I have determined it at, will win a 1941-S Lincoln wheat PCGS MS66.
...based on current sales of various Gettysburgs in MS67 with or without toning, I'd image to hear some opinions of what my Getty should be valued at. Just a relative high/low range is what I'm curious to know what the forum thinks. Important to note, the coin is not for sale, I'd just like to get thoughts on it.image ...Also, is it NGC Star* worthy or not worth the submission review?image

Edited to add: I just found my coin in September of 1999

$1200, but only if the slab comes autographed by Bingham, Billy "White Shoes" Johnson, Early Campbell, and Kenny Stabler.

    1300

the coin is sweet, but a * ?

hm. i can see nice toning allowing for it. why not? sure.

    ummm... $1350 to $1450
  • A nice white PCGS 66 went for $800 on Teletrade, so I figure 2x that for one grade up, and another 1.5x bump for nice toning, and I get $2500. How much it would go for at auction would depend on how many people want it bad. It could go for moon money, or just a nice retail price.

please do not include me in this contest

    hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

my value range for this coin would be it would sell for including the juice at a heritage signature sale

    3250-3750

if it was on a major commem dealers web site that specializeed in early commems and was listed at a price where it would sell for in a couple of weeks or less time $3750

    $3200?
  • $4000

Clearly yours is much nicer than the coin sold on Heritage......but it's in an NGC holder so I don't think it would bring as much as a PCGS coin.....so

    $4000

shot at the star ... yes

value as it sits ... I'd be thinking it's worth at least 3600. based on the little I know about these

    $2250

Why not cross it to PCGS?
  • mozinmozin Posts: 8,755 ✭✭✭
You probably think your coin is worth $3300.

I guess it is worth somewhere between $2600 and $3000. This NGC coin has been around for enough years that I doubt it would cross to PCGS at the same grade. I also doubt it would get the NGC star, because by now someone would have already tried for the star, probably more than once. It is a lovely coin, and it deserves to be reholdered.image

$2850- and I really don't think it should have a star. The toning is nice, but not breathtaking. Star eye appeal should bring an involuntary "holy crap!!!"..... image

    Dizzy,

You said your coin is not for sale. If I were you I would reconsider, and contact some of the CU members giving your coin so much worth. You have four people saying over $4000, with a high of $5,655. How about you consign your coin to auction so we know what it is worth for real?image

It probably depends which Auction lists it and what show hosts the auction... It could be a significant range... 2850-4100

Tom, I've considered thatimage ...I've owned my Bingham Getty now for about four months and I've had three inquires from interested parties. The offers I've received were incredible and very difficult to turn down. The problem is, replacing it. I have yet to see a Gettysburg that, in my opinion, comes anywhere close in terms of color toning, luster and over-all eye appeal. I'm not going to reveal "my" idea of what it's worth yet, but it's interesting to see the diversity in opinions from the forum on its' value.

A couple points regarding this thread. What I'm looking for (or was looking for) is what you think the value range would be on a Getty like this one based on prices realized for other Getty's in MS67, not what you would pay for it. There are many different issue coins in the hobby which have various price values but I certainly wouldn't pay them. For example, if a 5c, 10c, or 25c coin "x" has a book value of $1000 but it also has very attractive and unique toning and the asking price is $2500, I probably wouldn't even pay the book value of $1000 because it's not an issue that I desire. I've noticed for the most part, those who guessed high values are those who either collect or have expressed interest in early commems and really understand the "hype" for commems with outrageous toning.
Anyhow, thanks to all who have participated in a somewhat convoluted contest. I'm not going to divulge my "final answer" yet but I will say this... based on auction prices, retail prices, and my three offers I've received on this coin, the closest members to the correct answer are ROBERTB, DickyBetz, FatMan, mommam17,colorcommem. I will also say this, I've seen quite a few high grade early commems in NGC holders with the "STAR" designation, and in IMHO, it's a no brainer that this coin should and will be in a star holder.image ...and who knows, perhaps it will be in a MS68 holder as well.imageimage

  • I had a real nice 68 that i bought for 30k and sold for just a tick under 50k about a year or so ago thru a heritage auction..this is one of my favorite issues so i follow sales a bit..i recall 2 very nice 67 grade coins that ive seen with very nice toning as well the first sold in the summer of 03' for about 6k and then about a yr later another example sold for near 10k...both of these 67's had real nice color and were strong for the grade..im sure Gregs coin (dizzy's now) would fall on par with these 2 other 67's though if memory serves on of these coins (probably the 10k example) looked for close to a 68 and had real similar color to my 68 example..
