<<These early half cents are hard to find in lower circulated grades without the normal problems: scratches, corrosion, cleaning, etc. This one is an exception!>>
1) The description states that scratches, corrosion and cleaning are indeed "problems"
2) The description implies that this coin is the exception to these "normal problems"
3) The title specifically states that the coin is "problem free"
What the coin sold for, or the fact that the seller offered money back plus shipping is irrelevant. I would personally be embarrased and ashamed to run an auction for that coin using the claims that were made.
The old adage to "Underpromise and overdeliver" goes a long way in the coin business.
Hayden, the real problem that I see here is that you hold yourself out as a professional numismatist. To tell the world that you bought this coin as a "problem free" coin and that you have no problem with it tells volumes about your professionalism. I appreciate the fact that you offered a refund, but to stick with the story that you consider this coin to be problem free for the type is almost unbelievable, but if really true, goes to you credibility as a professional. IMHO Regards Gary
<< <i>Not a bad coin except for the scratches, corrosion, and cleaning. HTubbs would have been ok except for calling the coin an exception to these problems. But the coin was clearly pictured and anyone with a lick of sense would have immediately seen that the coin was a mess. My advice to you is to not buy a coin that you don't know anything about. IMHO Regards Gary >>
I disagree...the way he has the photo, on certain monitors (laptops, etc) it may not show the scratches clearly as it is dark. You should see Herb's pictures of the coin...THEN you can see the problems. The point of this is that a forum member, who has been around for awhile and is a wannabe seller (they usually only hang out in the BST) consistently spams the forum there and also titled the auction as PROBLEM FREE, then alluded to the same in the auction description.
I don't care if it was a picture of a monkey's arse....if the title and description state something, then it should match that....unless it was an honest mistake or a newbie mistake. For htubbs, it was neither (as evidenced by how much he sells and his actions around them).

Remember it's not how you pick your nose that matters, it's where you put the boogers.
That coin is in no way problem free. An "ACCURATE" description would have mentioned the scratches etc. Now let's stop the ping pong "GAME" of words and call a spade a spade.
Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground.

Since when has HTubbs respected a single forum rule? Especially on the BST forum with his flagrant multiple TTTs a day.
a terrible coin and with many problems no brainer problems to boot i will not go into here
but the short answer
YOU WAS ROBBED
i would never sell as such a coin anywhere unless sight seen to a collector with all the multiple problems clearly written on the 2x2 and then if someone bought it then that is okie with me
from auction description, These early half cents are hard to find in lower circulated grades without the normal problems: scratches, corrosion, cleaning, etc. This one is an exception! Take a look at the pics:
You are right -they are hard to find. The exception he notes is that you DID find a normal problem coin on his auction and he made it easy. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
HTUBBS is off base for doing PM's w/o permission.
And he is a tacky dealer for treating the BST board as darn near his personal fiefdom.
Buying and selling coins is a luxury. He seems to like to make it a challenge.
If you are a type collector the dates to go for are 1804 or 1806. Those are the two most common dates, and the coins are generally well made.
The 1807 half cents were all made from ONE die pair. As a result the dies were badly worn during that run, and many coins have some weakness in their strike. Even the early die states of this issue were not well made. The dies were out of alignment, and the coins were stronger on the left side fo the obverse than the right side. (For those who care about such things, the early die state of the 1807 half cent "full dentiles" brings a strong premium among collectors of early copper die varieties.
I would net grade you coin as a Good-5. The sharpness is VG, but it has scratches and there is a spot in the middle of the obverse where a ight corrosion spot was probably removed. As with everything what you paid determines if you got a good deal.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. << <i>Geez, he offered you a refund plus shipping both ways.
Why is it such a difficult decision?
Man up, send it back, then be more careful and buy a nice one next time.
Mike >>
Mike, you know that is a good question............ I really don't know why I've not send it back, many people have told me to do just that.
I would think part of the reason is my being thick headed (stubborn)..........I've told everyone and Tubbs I'm keeping the coin and by gosh that's what I'm going to do, no matter how stupid it makes me look, yea I'm like that.
Maybe I'll put it up on ebay, advertise it as a problem coin and see what happens. Give Tubbs a chance to buy it back, he'll see right through my accurate description and will have a chance at a rip.
Herb
Remember it's not how you pick your nose that matters, it's where you put the boogers.
when buying on eBay, you must use title, description and pictures to make bidding decisions
if the 3 do not jive, ask the seller a question or bid at your own risk
picture-> clearly shows lighter color on obverse and cleaning/scratch lines
title/description-> is this a typo? maybe missing a word like NOT a problem free coin
when selling, people occasionally make mistakes in listing
the seller specifically listed a 7 day money back satisfaction guarantee
ibzman350, you clearly got the coin pictured
I feel you are in the wrong in this case
you have used this forum to complain about a purchase that you have had the opportunity to get out of and should not have gotten into in the first place

SININ, WHAT? Did you READ the entire auction???? I'm assuming you could not have by reading your post.
the coin was advertised as PROBLEM FREE in the title and the seller elaborated FURTHER in his description. We've already determined that depending on the monitor you may/may not see that the seller is full of crap. The seller did not accidentally omit the word "NOT".
The buyer did like most of us do,......assume that a fellow forum member is going to be HONEST if anyone on ebay is.
How on earth is this anyone's fault other than Htubbs? I find your defense for Htubbs laughable.
This coin is a turd. Nevermind the scratches and corrosion, looks like someone used the old eraser trick to brighten up the obv center. Problem-full would be a more apt term.
A VG coin described as problem free, even an early half cent, should have just even wear, and commensurate marks for the grade. Corrosion, polishing, and X - shaped scratches are not commensurate with any grade but "filler or cull."
But for cryin' out loud, look at the freaking scan on the Ebay page - the coin looks, well, just as crappy!
I, myself, tend to buy the coin, not the description. Although I have in the past, told the occasional "story" - last I knew, good marketing was still legal
The Ebay picture speaks for itself... Yuk.
Herb, send the coin back. If you're in desperate need, email or PM me - I may have something to fill that hole.
Back earlier in this thread I hammered Hayden for non-payment on a coin he won for a charity donation. Well in all fairness I will give him a one half apology. His payment was in the mail box this afternoon. It arrived exactly one month after he said it was on the way. Better late than never but really not at all in the spirt of getting the money quickly to the charity for the hurricane Katrina victims.
The coin in question here....No Comment at all. I think it speaks for itself and the problems it has. The title of the auction was way deceiving and the picture was way to dark for some monitors.
This coin is a piece of crap. Any one who thinks this coin represents a typically circulated half cent needs to have his eye's checked, not to mention should quit dealing coins and find something else to do. IMO, this auction description was a true misrepresentation of the item sold, leaning toward downright discraceful. If were one of the several members reading this thread, I know who not to buy from!

While the price was'nt really that bad,the scratches should have been noted in the auction.JMO.
