What is the nicest thing a dealer ever said to you?

To me it was "there is no Santa Claus in numismatics." This was an important message. I received it at just the right time as I was falling for some "this is a super incredible bargain" pitches then.

"Stop over at my table and I'll show you some stuff."

I got to go through a couple hundred first-class coins and discuss the ones I had questions about, got to see some original plaster models for classic commems, and also got to see some great historical numismatic ephemera (such as original US Mint price lists for proof coins... in the 1800's!) . For a dealer to take that amount of time during a show just to share some knowledge was very much appreciated. There wasn't anything in it for him, that's for sure.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

"Sure, I remember you, you had a great eye." Spoken by a dealer I hadn't seen in probably eight years, and who I used to run my Lincoln Cent purchases by.

"Look a little closer- there is some minor cleaning damage on the reverse fields- I want you to know that before you give me an offer". That was on a nice bust half, and cleaning I did not see with the lighting in the store. I gave that dealer a lot of my money thru the years.

Also, I might add Mark Feld (Coinguy1) who gives brutally honest evaluations of coins he screens on behalf of clients. I realize he's working on behalf of the buyer, but it's a rare coin that meets with his satisfaction and he's not afraid to tell you.

Referring to a coin in the dealer's own inventory:

"Don't buy that one. Wait until I can find you a better one."

Pinnacle/Doug Winter, Legend, Gold Rush Gallery, and Mark Feld have all talked me out of buying coins in their inventory without steering me to something else.

(By a dealer who is a board member) --

Me: Remember that nice ___ I bought from you at $X? I may need to sell it to raise money for <worthy cause>. If that should come to pass, would you be interested in buying it back at .93 * X?

Dealer: Sorry... that won't work for me... but under the circumstances, I could buy it back for... X!

The coin in question is one of my very favorites, so as it happened I finagled things so that I could keep it. Still, I thought that was pretty cool. Besides the fact that the dealer in question stocks great coins, when I am in buy mode again, I will certainly remember this.

Not a specific thing, but a continual thing. A dealer will meet with me at a local show and either walk the floor with me or will be available to answer ??? This dealer is a member of this board. Many of you know who this dealer is but if anyone would like to know, send me a PM.

I can only think of one. A couple years ago I was at a coin show and I wanted a 1988 proof 1/10th gold american eagle in mint packaging. I found a dealer that had many; I asked and he showed me a 1988 proof 1/4 gold american eagle in mint packaging. So I looked at it and noticed it was a 1/4 eagle. So I asked how much; get this; he took the coin, looked at it and said $65.00 dollars. Of course I said sold. and thank you.

I'm not a morning person, so by the time I leave the house it's about noon. A couple of years ago at the Long Beach show I got there around 2 PM on the last day and already half the dealers are either gone or starting to pack up.

I was looking at some coins at this guy's table and commented that the place was getting empty already and I wanted to look around some more before buying anything. He was a middle-aged guy from the Midwest and dressed in a suit and tie and a nice guy to talk to. I told him I wanted to look around some more before buying and he said...

"I'll be here until the show closes. Come on back and I'll be happy to help you out."

I did find a better deal on one of the coins I was looking for, but I did go back and spent $1,000 with the guy.

    How about adding attribution.

"Glad you made it over to my table. I'm trying to decide if I should buy this coin and wanted to know what you thought of it." ...Steve Leber

"You have a great eye and wonderful coins." ...Jerry Bobbee

"So, you want to buy this coin. How much do you want to pay me for it?"
    Me..."$2350".
"Not a bad guess. It'll cost you $2150." ...Ron Iskowitz.

Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

"Oh, you don't owe me $135 for those, you forgot your good guy discount, make it $115."

    Same dealer at a show:
"Yeah, I have that date in PCGS 64, just bought it about 15 minutes ago and paid $120, give me $125 and it's yours."

Both of the prices were under bid, by the way. image
