NEW PCGS TRUE VIEW (tm) PHOTO SERVICE

What do you think about this? Seems like a great new moneymaker for PCGS to me. Could it be the wave of the future? Comments.

Sounds good. They do have to handle your coin more for it though increasing the chance of fingerprints.

Sounds like a nice service to offer. The biggest advantage that I see is that they are shooting the coins raw. I like to do my own.

While it sounds good, I also think it would be a scammer's paradise. They say they will store the pictures online.. think of all the photos that are now accessible.

I can see issues with the "free" availability of photos online. It will be very easy to get pictures off of the site and put them up on ebay. The photo essentially becomes property of PCGS. Shouldn't it remain the property of the owner? This will be too easy for scammers on ebay.

To prevent scamming sellers will have to show an in hand photo of the slab too. Then someone will probably rip that also for a scam auction. Scammers always seem to find a way.

The service is not a bad idea regardless, especially for $5. The sample photos look great! There's no mention of it being available with economy service. For now I'll probably keep practicing my own coin photography.

The other negative that I see from this service offering is that the few coins that I would like to have photographed reside in older holders that I do not care to have removed and handled, even though they may upgrade, I like them left in thier current holders. Otherwise a neat marketing concept.

Sounds like a good service. And it sounds like it's only $3 if you were planning to do a reholder anyway:

"Coins already in PCGS holders can be photographed and reholdered for $8 per coin (or $25 for coins valued over $20,000 or those graded either PCGS MS 70 or PR 70). "

It would also be nice if they could provide this with cross-overs -- add $5 per coin that does cross (no fee and no picture if the coin doesn't cross). From their description it didn't sound like this is currently an option.

Looks good to me, I plan to use it. I had begun imaging each coin prior to a submission anyway.

No, the coin is yours - any photograph is the copyrighted property of the author (photographer) the moment the shutter clicks (assuming no trademark infringement etc..) - unless otherwise specified in writing. Or uh..something like that. Coppercoins will agree I think with that statement (or ammend it image)

As for the service - from a $$$ point of view it is an excellent idea!!!!! We may see more fingeprints though, and that is not good. I charge people if they want to publish photographs of items in any of my collections (LOT of other stuff, not talking coins here). I see no advantage to me personally having images of my items floating around that I can't control.

I think the photo's look great except in those that I have seen, the actual grade is not displayed, just the certification number.

What format will the 5 meg (large) photo come in JPEG or TIFF? Obviously the small will be JPEG.

Hmmmmmmm, seems like it is time to send my old rattlers in for new holders and a pic to boot. Are they going to keep the same cert numbers or reissue numbers? Could this put a ripple out in the market with questionable grades in the rattlers now being in new holders with a new number, thus having the appearance of an up to date grade? Hope they hired whom ever does the photo work for Goldbergs or ANR.

If you do not like the photo, can you send it in for a Presidential photo review?

"Under our PCGS TrueViewSM Reholder Service, we also will accept previously certified PCGS coins for imaging outside the holder. PCGS will remove the coin from the encapsulation holder, create the image, and then place the coin in a new holder with the same grade and certification number. If you're a collector, this is the best way to get top-quality images of your PCGS-certified numismatic treasures," said Guth.

I'm thinking that the new submission forms will have the grading/photo option on them. Perhaps specifying other on the current submission form will get it. But then if you really wanted to know, you could always call customer service.

A great idea I suggested to BJ a while back. PCGS is in the ultimate position to photo great coins raw, why not take advantage of it?

I see they've already trademarked their images -- hopefully they'll post their first pics here and let us decide if they're worth their trademarkimage

xbob - a little too generic for my tastes. Hopefully PCGS will come up with some great pics with this service.

    Thanks for the link.

No matter what anyone may say, this is a step in the right direction by PCGS. There are so many benefits to obtaining high quality photographs, that they cannot be listed here.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Thirty three years ago a certification service started issuing photos of the coins with a serial number. Six year later they started grading them as well. Eight years later slabs came into existance and they dropped the photos with the serial numbers. Nineteen years pass and the people that gave us slabs now provide photos with a serial number again. (Following in the footsteps of NGC who did it earlier this year with the Eliasberg foreign gold collection.)

Here are a few of the images they made for my pattern display. I couldn't be happier with the service and the quality. In fact I submitted 6 more coins here at the show for darkhorse to image. Now I can hardly wait to get them back!image

"Awesome" I guess they don't put the coins grade on these?
