NEW PCGS TRUE VIEW (tm) PHOTO SERVICE
What do you think about this? Seems like a great new moneymaker for PCGS to me. Could it be the wave of the future? Comments.

The service is not a bad idea regardless, especially for $5. The sample photos look great! There's no mention of it being available with economy service. For now I'll probably keep practicing my own coin photography.

"Coins already in PCGS holders can be photographed and reholdered for $8 per coin (or $25 for coins valued over $20,000 or those graded either PCGS MS 70 or PR 70). "
Apropos of the coin posse/aka caca: "The longer he spoke of his honor, the tighter I held to my purse."

<< <i>I can see issues with the "free" availability of photos online. It will be very easy to get pictures off of the site and put them up on ebay. The photo essentially becomes property of PCGS. Shouldn't it remain the property of the owner? This will be too easy for scammers on ebay. >>
No, the coin is yours - any photograph is the copyrighted property of the author (photographer) the moment the shutter clicks (assuming no trademark infringement etc..) - unless otherwise specified in writing. Or uh..something like that. Coppercoins will agree I think with that statement (or ammend it
As for the service - from a $$$ point of view it is an excellent idea!!!!! We may see more fingeprints though, and that is not good. I charge people if they want to publish photographs of items in any of my collections (LOT of other stuff, not talking coins here). I see no advantage to me personally having images of my items floating around that I can't control.

<< <i>Are they going to keep the same cert numbers or reissue numbers? >>
"Under our PCGS TrueViewSM Reholder Service, we also will accept previously certified PCGS coins for imaging outside the holder. PCGS will remove the coin from the encapsulation holder, create the image, and then place the coin in a new holder with the same grade and certification number. If you're a collector, this is the best way to get top-quality images of your PCGS-certified numismatic treasures," said Guth.

I'm thinking that the new submission forms will have the grading/photo option on them. Perhaps specifying other on the current submission form will get it. But then if you really wanted to know, you could always call customer service.

I see they've already trademarked their images -- hopefully they'll post their first pics here and let us decide if they're worth their trademark

No matter what anyone may say, this is a step in the right direction by PCGS. There are so many benefits to obtaining high quality photographs, that they cannot be listed here.
