POLL: Have you ever been stuck with a counterfeit coin?

PrethenPrethen Posts: 3,466 ✭✭✭
This poll is a supplement to my question about destroying counterfeit coins. Have you ever bought a counterfeit coin thinking it was genuine and not been able to return it...that is, it's yours forever and ever?

Up to this point, I've been fortunate and I believe everything I have is legit.

No. That probably means that I'm not smart enough to realize that I've been taken. I like ignorance.

Virtually all dealers will respond positively to this.

    I just did.

    Yes,

I own a struck counterfeit 1911 $5 Indian that I bought raw from a golf buddy. It had been in his family since the 40's, and is xf+. I paid $100, and expect it would fetch close to that sold as a counterfeit.

I voted "no", but now that I think of it, I did get a counterfeit American Plantations token on eBay once. However, I had bid on it knowing full well it was probably fake, so I wasn't out a lot of money.

Yep,got nailed on a 1911 2 1/2 Indian from a vest pocket dealer at a local show. Apparently these are highly counterfieted---so no more for me unless the dealer is well established or they are certified by the right TPG.

I bought a counterfeit Lafayette dollar from a guy once. As far as I'm aware, he believed it genuine. He refunded, but it could have turned out badly.

This is one that would probably not fool many.
It would be a shame to destroy it.

I have a counterfeit IHC. Purchased the coin when I was in my teens, thought the small raised bumps were odd then, but never suspected anything foul. Brought that bad boy back out approx. 10 years ago and realized what it was.

Man, was that shop owner flabbergasted when I approached him ~15 yrs. later. I made damn sure he knew that I knew the coin was no good, and that I knew where it came from, and who it came from. He had that "oh my god is this guy going to go psycho on me" look on his face. image

It's a neat coin. I sent it to Lakesamman at one point for him to check it out. I'll never get rid of it at this point, unless someone was putting together some sort of display of IHC fakes for a presentation or display of some sorts.

  • michaelmichael Posts: 9,524 ✭✭✭
and i did a trade with him and he thought i was going to do something really big with him later in a month and pulled the coin out and from what i saw on the look on his face he knew he had sold me a fake and so he was not too happy to get it back but he took it back and said nothing and i did not ever do anything with him again

i am sure some he placed it with some other lucky buyer from then on i checked each coin before i bought it and not take someones word on it without examining the edge and rims first LOL

1916-D merc. came back "oops" from ANACS. Luckily for the old farte no 'count dealer I bought it from he took it back and gave me full refund. He undoubtedly sold it to someone else. image

When I was in Vietnam, I bought an 1875 CC Trade $; it was a very good fake, and fooled many dealers when I showed it to them when I brought it home.

<RANT>Altered coins (such as changed dates, added/removed MM's) are not counterfiets. They are real coins which have been doctored up to fool unaware collectors. Contemporary counterfiets were made to pass into circulation and are just as historical as the coins they replaced in commerce. </RANT>

I do Civil War reenacting and I asked my father-in-law to bring me back some Seated Liberty Dollars from China where he was going on vacation. He brought me back 40 of them and I give them away to other "soldiers" so they can have money in their pockets when reenacting. I never sell them, only give them, and tell them they must keep them as they are not real. Just fun pieces. My father-in-law paid only $0.75 each for them.

Thanks for importing and distributing a large number of fake silver dollars. You are a real asset to the hobby.

I have a counterfeit lincoln 14D F15 that I bought when I was 14 or 15. 30 years later it comes out of the coin album and PCGS sez it's bogus.
oh well. the dealer - long gone - was later known to have made a market for stolen and bogus coins.

I had a dubious uncle who made fake coins by the handsfull. After my dad died, I inherited a few mostly worn pieces that dad had not sold off with the rest of his collection and among them were two 1914D pennies in AU brown condition and a 1909S vdb about vg. I could tell because of the spacing between numbers that the 1914D's were fake but thought the '09 was real. Some time later, I got a microscope and wanted to have a look at the mint mark. I was very let down to find that the '09 too was clearly a fake. He had added an "S" to an '09 vdb.

All the counterfeits I own I bought as counterfeit.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
  • I with all intent saw 2 sweet looking Trade dollars about 6 months ago, that were being touted as REAL by a guy at one of them antique stores here in Texas. I will not divulge him for attempting to sell fake as real-

I'm not a perfect person- but I took some strong advice from you good folks on the boards- READ A BOOK see the photo- then decide. Well to make a long story longer-hehe, I tell the kind old guy I'm really interested in his 1877 S and 1873 S- his price is 500 on each (sad as it may seem- I happen to have both of these- and they are real), i pulled out my 1877 and the man started to shake- not to uncontrollably - but shake and stammer he did.

I being a nice guy - told him that what he had was as phony as a 3 dollar bill and I would be willing to take them off his hands for a mere 2 bucks each- would you believe the guy comes back at me and sez he needs to recoup what he paid and wanted 50 for each- I explained to him - he would be better selling them to me at 2 bucks before I notified a cop that he was attempting to sell counterfiet money as real. I have em in my collection as we speak- and it cost me 4 bucks total.

The wife n I went back to this same little place about 4 weeks ago (just before my lil brother did his thing) and the guy has another 1877 S- and again is touting it as real- this time the reason is because they weighed it and I now have that one but I paid 3 dollars for it.

With all 3 I showed the man just what the problem was- he was baffled, I asked him for his 'contact', I wanted to buy a few more from the person- he politely refused, said he was afraid I would turn the guy in to the feds, I told him I probably would- just to get that kind of scum off the streets. He did make me one promise which I'm sure he won't keep- sez he will not buy another trade dollar from the guy ever again- yeah I truly believe that.

Today is the last day that I can drink alcohol- and I have decided not to have a drink before I start chemo on Monday. Am I ok for not having a drink?

I got stuck with a cast counterfiet Morgan Dollar about 5 years ago on Ebay. Still have it, as I did not realize it was a fake until I bought a book a couple of years later.

I'd crack a bottle of wine if I were you. I know I did when in a similar situation. Didn't get drunk or anything, just got a nice buzz going for the day and enjoyed it.

I'm "stuck" with a conterfeit $1 gold coin, but consider that I stuck myself with it. I was buying some coins from a private party. I couldn't put my finger on it but this $1 gold just didn't look right to me. I'm well aware of how much bad $1 gold is out there. The coin was of proper weight and I bought it; albeit for less than I would normally have paid. Sure enough, it was counterfeit. I keep it as a lesson to trust my education and instincts.

Personally, I am more worried about buying a counterfiet for my collection and then finding out that it is real. There are a number of contemporary counterfiets of bust halves which are worth multiples more than the real thing in a comparable grade. (Hasn't happened yet, though.)
