I don't think that it will amount to much so long as it is available from the mint. I admire the Marine Corp, but what is it with a 230th anniversary? That is not a number that is often selected for a celebration. It's a bit like the 38th anniversary coins for the Korean War. OK, the 38th parallel is where the parties drew the line in the sand to suspend the conflict, but in as for anniversaries, that number does not mean anything.

My guess is if the sales are disappointing, the coin might have a decent after issue market value, but chances are the number sold will be just enough to make it an item that collectors will be able to buy for less than the issue price a couple years from now.

It has wiped out the Mint's website today. I will try to pick one up at the ANA because I like the looks of it, not because I think it will become valuable or anything. (if not, my dealer ordered them today, and it took quite a bit of time to go through).

600,000 maximum mintage seems awfully big. Wish they'd limited it to maybe 200,000.

By comparison, the 1994 world cup in proof had a mintage of 576k and it's worth about $35 even when certified PCGS MS69.

The 2002 West Point had a mintage of only 282k (potentially less than 1/2 of the Marine). And it's selling for $25 all day on eBay, maybe $40 certified MS69.

I brought 1 proof and 1 unc/stamp set. I think this coins looks great. If your going by total mintages it may not be special but it's a high interest coin of the armed forces and a great icon unlike the world cup and boring west point coin IMO. Demand is what makes a coin go up not just how many are minted.

The buffalo dollar is still worth well over the West Point, and had a much higher mintage. Demand is the key (not the mintage).

All marines and their families probably would want one and a whole lotta collectors too. Just my analysis.

I totally agree with this opinion also. BUT it's a question of success for whom? Collectors? Yes, those who miss out on buying from the mint will be able to pick one up in the bargain boxes for years to come.

As for the mint, they seem to have speculators eager to eat up anything and everything that they put out these days. Good for them - it probably helps out the economy to convert excess cash into small lumps of silver - helps curb inflation.image

As for me, I think I'll pass on this fantastic oportunity - I was in the Army Airborne.image

It won't bill until then at least has been my experience.

I only got one of the proof and 2 prestige (one to keep, one to hopefully sell), thinking about going back to get the single uncirc. though.
  • I could not get through the web page, contacted US Mint direct and after 30 ++ minutes I picked up 5 each. Only ordered the coins since I am a Retired Marine (MSGT) and like the coin design. Further I will be donating to a good cause (The Marine Corps History).

OK, I just visited the Mint website to take a look at that Marine Commemorative - never bothered before cause I was so turned off by the 600,000 mintage. Anyway, and this is comming from an Army guy, that's one damned fine looking Coin! I can see why the Mint raised the limit now.

Now I have to decide if I want to order from the website or try to pick off a pre-slabbed MS69 out of debay at what I hope will be a bargain price.

I bought the coin and stamp version. I think it and some other versions will sell out. Lt. General Christmas will 'encourage' all Marines to buy one. As a former world-famous-Marine-Corps-fighter-pilot, we were 'encouraged' to pay extra dues to keep the local O' Club afloat...I've seen this movie before. I can hear it now, "this one's for the Corps museum." As for the 'prestige' set, too expensive and terrible compilation...which means a low mintage and future gains like the mid-90's sets.

Anyone think about what they will do when the spots show up???

A few because I like the coin

And a few on pure speculation

  • IMO, the US Marines coin is the best design in a silver dollar since the buffalo dollar in 2001. It will be a hit, I'm sure. There is something about that image of the Marines raising that flag on that bleak volcanic island of Iwo Jima during WW II - a timeless, heroic image. It will be a very popular coin, a winner.

Please don't obsess too much over milk spots. Form what I've seen the most milk spot prone coins are often in slabs. It's been my experience that coins in the mint holders might tarnish or tone a little over 10+ years, but that would not stop me from collecting them.

OK, I know I'm late in joining this conversation. I have been on vacation for the past 10 days. I normally order my coins from the mint from the web site. However, the Marine coin, is a whole other story. I am an office manager for a company with 4 salesmen and a little over two hundred clients. One day it water cooler talk with the sales manager and company owner I mention the Marine Core Comm. bacause I know the sales manager is an ex-marine. Next thing I know I am agreeing to order a dozen proof coins not only for the sales manager, but ex-marine friends, and the owners wants one and then they start thinking of every client who was ex-marine and " Oh that whould be a cool gift... etc." Well, I was going to order one proof and one Unc. for myself and I was thinking mabye a American Legacy Set. I ended up ordering almost $700.00 of Marine coins. I will be reimbursed for most of it but, these coins are also going to people who do not collect coins, which I think will hapen to a large number of these coins, which in my mind will only help the price in the long run. Anyway, since the release date was in the middle of my vacation, I end up spending 30 mins on my cell phone at Disney World with one finger shoved in my ear trying to hear the US mint customer service lady, while trying to order the coins. I sure hope they end up being worth more than I paid, because this is thie first time anyone in my office has expressed any intrest in my 'coin collection thing'. And, because they were excited I did order extras to sell, thinking if these guys are intrested then surely there would be more.

This kind of story makes me think they will be a runaway success and double on eBay. Not sure if I'm ready to put my money where my mouth (fingers) are though, I haven't even sold on eBay yet.

I have a similar evolving story about the nine planet S$1's + $50 sun gold slug coming soon... I'm an Astronomy nerd, and on two Astro message boards I've seen people discuss this set already, more than a few people who most likely aren't coin collectors said they wanted them. Demand is always a basis of price, and demand outside the coin collecting community can only drive up the price, just a question of total mintage and how much demand. I know there's more (ex-)Marines than Astro geeks, so I'll have to wait to see the mintage for the solar system commems before I could guess on prices for those.
Varieties are the spice of a Type Set.
