OT: Good Luck to Those Facing Hurricane Dennis.

RampageRampage Posts: 9,689 ✭✭✭✭✭
I live in the Florida Panhandle and am seeing rainbands as I write this. Hopefully, I am far enough east that the storm will have only a minimal impact, i.e. tropical storm strength, rather than hurricane strength. To those living further west of here and in the eye's path, good luck to you.

Richard.

What part of the Panhandle?? Dennis passed by here this morning and we had some minor power outages and a few tree limbs blown down. Looks right now that it is heading for the Alabama/Florida Border...Same place IVAN crushed last year............

Thankfully no big deal here in Port Charlotte. Take care up there in the Panhandle though and surely if y'all get hit, you'll be seeing help coming from down South and everywhere else.

Looks like it will be time to rebuild the panhandle area again the way it looks. The hurricanes in the last few years sure aren't showing any mercy to the areas they keep battering over & over again. The insurance carriers are bound to make it even harder to insure coastal properties the way it's going. Even my area(30 miles north of Galveston) has had our deductibles jump dramatically based on what has happening.

I wish everyone luck who is in line to see some part of Dennis.

My property taxes DOUBLED this year. They claim it was needed after Charlie.

Notice how they never say that it's NOT needed?

I'm in Mobile and maybe on the west side of Dennis - I hope. The wind has not started to pick up yet, but should start about midnight. Just finished cleaning up from Cindy and now this one. Oh well, we are on high ground and this is not the first hurricane we've been though.

I live in Tallahassee. Yes, it does seem to be going to the same general area that Hurricane Ivan made landfall last year as a strong category three storm. Ivan caused tremendous damage to the extreme western panhandle of Florida (and other places as well, of course), including the collapse of portions of the I-10 bridge over Escambia Bay. I do feel very badly for those folks. I lived in Homestead during Hurricane Andrew (category 5) on August 24, 1992. It was a night I will never forget.

I hope the folks will do better during Hurricane Dennis, but as it seems now, the storm may be a category 4 by the time it makes landfall. Considering thousands of people have still not recovered from Ivan, it looks bad.

    Good luck to all...

    Richard.

I think you guys got your money's worth last year.

I'm in Tampa. Looks like we're in the clear.

Good luck to those in the Panhandle, southern Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana -- this one looks like it is going to get stronger before it gets there. Take care...Mike

My biggest concern is that in less than 24 my hours my power is going to go off. Could be for 1 day, maybe 1 week, could be a month. Sure gonna miss that A/C!! grrrrr........

I am in New Orleans and just recently surrived Cindy. I am grateful that Dennis looks like it is not heading this way. However, I would not wish somrthing like this on my worst enemy. God Bless to anyone in the path. If you decide to run for the storm in this direction let me know I have a few connections with hotels and may be able to find you a room in the Big Easy in need be.

    Hey all,

I was hoping that this one would die out a bit more than it did after crossing Cuba. Now it has linked up with a midlatitude trough that is helping with outflow on the poleward side of the storm. I would not be surprised if Dennis intensified more in the next 12 hours.

I wish you guys the best. I have been in three of these things and I know that they are often times weatherable, especially when you are "used" to them.
However, I would highly urge you guys that live in between Mobile all the way over to Destin to think about boarding up and going North.

Edited to add, after looking at the new model guidance, Mobile might get the worst of it...landfall could easily be just west of you. Be careful Dog.

This storm is going to be worse than Ivan I am afraid..

I hope it hits me head on. Or @ least to the east. If it does then the wind will blow for a couple of hours & it'll be over.
If it hits Mobile or MS/LA then I'll be on the windy side of it and the bands that are running the entire length of west FL will batter me & the FL guys for 2 days.
Yeah, it's going to be much worse than Ivan unless something drastic changes in the next 12 hours.

Dog, I hope you are safe by now. If you have not moved out of the way by now please do so. I have lived along the gulf coast my whole life and if you are still along the AL coast you need to leave. I'm in N.O. LA and I am still a little nervous.

The wind is starting to blow a little in Mobile. The worst part is that it is coming from the ENE. That means the eye is headed on a line just a little east and if it does not change direction we will see the full hurricane force winds. I was hoping the wind would be from the N - that would mean the storm was to the east and we would most likely get only tropical storm force winds. I've done everything I can do as far as getting ready so now we'll just set and wait.

Like dog said the worst part(assuming no major damage) is losing power. During Ivan it was off 7 days. This time could be longer. I'll give it three days then we are heading north and some AC.

They just said it was going a little more east putting it @ Pcola. But they said it could be just a temp bump and it could as well hit Baldwin County head on.
stev32 they said the west side only had 120 mph winds compared with the east side of 145. You may have it a little less bad over there.

I live near Tampa, and I've got to say so far so good. There was one big tree down in the neighborhood, but it fell away from the guy's house, thank goodness. If I ever let a big oak tree grow my yard, you will known that I have lost my marbles. Those things in a storm make more people homeless than the wind.

All we have to worry about is tornados, which have cropped up along the coast.

BUT GEE - it's only July and we have not even hit the peak season yet (August and September). It looks like it's going to be another bad hurricane season down here. image

I wish all in the path to be safe and well. I suspect this one is for real as parts of Atlanta got over 4" rain last night from one of the feeder bands. We're talking over 400 miles away from the eye. Its a bigun guys. Take care.

In Abalama we talk slow, drive slow, work slow so of course we're slow about getting upset about a major killer cane headed our way. So I boarded my house up at 8 am this morning in a light rain, rode down the road to check on my kinfolks & neighbors & helped some cousins board up a house. I got like 15 cousins within a mile, they're staying in their homes. 5 of them were actually in North Carolina on some business and rushed here early this morning to to sit it out @ their homes. Everybody else is running away. hahahhahha
Wind speed dropping to 130 mph. Foward speed increasing to 18 mph. that's good, means it will blow on out of here faster. What a relief! We're not scared anymore. 145 mph was scaring the *L* out of us. image Hopefully it will still be daylight when it hits so I can get some good picts. I know I won't have power much longer, got the flashlights & candles ready. image Man it's going to SUCK without AC. @#$%!!!!

Attic vents on my roof are spinning and bumping & thumping like a helicopter up there. I forgot to tie them down so they won't spin. Got to go up on the roof and fix them before it gets really nasty cause I aint going to listen to that all day. Danggonnet!!!

Now it's vered to the east and looks like it will follow the same track as Ivan. Gulf Shores and Penscola are going to get wacked again. The wind here is now coming from due north, and that's good news for us, bad news for the Eastern shore of Mobile Bay.

I expect power to be off in the next hour maybe two at most.

Good luck to everyone in it's path, I pray for everyone.

Yep getting a bit breezy here. Fixed the turbines. Nothing a piece of rope won't take care of. Bad thing is my rope was in a shed hurricane Ivan blew down last year and when I bent over to crawl inside I put my hand in a red wasp nest. OUCH!! My girlfriend says "why you rubbing toothpaste on your hand?"

Just an update from Mobile. We were very lucky. The storm turned out to be a non-event here. We had some gusts up to about 40 MPH, light to moderate rain, no damage, no trees down, and best of all we still have power. That's a far different outcome than the predictions.

Lowes and Home Depot sold many, many truck loads of plywood, electric generators, and tarps. Wal-Mart sold out candles, batteries, Coleman lanterns, and every store for miles around sold out of bottled water. They also say there is not a drop of gasoline to be had anywhere in the City of Mobile.

The good news...We fared well at our house just north of Destin Florida. The hurricane didn't do much in the imediate vicinity. One tree down on a nieghbors roof.

The bad news....No Morgan Dollars and VAMs strewn all over the neighborhood for forum scavengers and Metal Detector guys.

Hope everyone else in the hurricane's path does as well as we did!! image

Whew that was too close for comfort. My power just came back on after 7 hours & 6 minutes. Non-event here too. That joker made a last minute turn to the north and the eye was so small it didn't make a very wide path of damage. I understand Pensacola & the Navare area is tore up but haven't looked at the news yet to see. I'm glad the Lord didn't rest today and took care of us instead on His day. I feel lucky to be alive, never mind not even having a single bit of damage. imageimageimageimage
