Weekday Poll: What percent of the money you spend on your coin collection is spent on ebay?

RYKRYK Posts: 35,800 ✭✭✭✭✭
I never buy coins for my core gold collection on ebay. Occasionally, I will purchase items like modern proofs and worn buffalo nickels for my son's collection on the 'bay. We sure spend a lot of time talking about ebay here. How much of our business are we giving to ebay merchants? Any comments or further discussion is (as always) welcome.

For the first time in several years I picked up a Buffalo nickel on ebay last week.

    I estimate I purchase about 40% eBay, 60% shows/ads.

  • I have been apprehensive about buying anything early, or fairly expensive on ebay.

  • I've bought 3 items off e-bay in the past month, but i leave the bulk up to my brother-in-law to pick up for me as he makes his weekly rounds.

  • I voted 6 - 20%, but I'd guess my actual is closer towards the low end of that range. It used to be much higher, but not any more, since I've been buying better stuff from other sources (Heritage, dealers, etc.) and selling off the stuff I bought on Ebay years ago.

I use to buy over 70% of my coins on eBay, but now I buy maybe 5% there. Mostly I buy at coin shops, flea markets, US Mint and what I can use, I keep and what I can't use, I either sell locally or I sell on eBay. So, I sell much more on eBay than I buy there.

Never. Not because I don't want to, I just don't know how it all works. My son came over one time and set up an account or something and spent about 30 seconds explaining it all to me but at my age it went right over my head. Only bought coins from one dealer over the net in my life and that took me hours to figure out how. I'm just to old for all this stuff.

  • I very rarely buy a coin from ebay...most of my coins come from the mint...If I buy a classic coin it will have to be in a graded holder...I learned my lesson from a crooked dealer on ebay, got my money back thanks to Eric.

I find that where I buy, is a function of what I buy. When I wanted to complete a low end silver Washington quarter set, the local coin show turned out to be the best place. When I wanted PCGS slabbed items (whether it was moderns or Morgans), eBay was the best place. Of course, the best place to get mint products is from the Mint. Additionally, the only thing I get at my local coin dealer is laughs.

In terms of dollar value, probably about 1/3. In terms of number of coins, probably about 50-60%.

I make most of my smaller coin purchases (under $50) on eBay. But I still look elsewhere, usually to dealers I trust and other reputable auction venues, for most of the more expensive coins (i.e. $200+).

Less than I used to. Currently about 10% or so.

Now, I only look for my elongated Columbian Expo coins there. In the past, I have bought moderns from mint sets for filling Dansco albums where I wasn't looking for top pops.

#4 it would be less but the desert country has only 1 coin shop. The rest is spent on auctions and web sites.

Russ, when I saw that caveat you were the first person I thought of...

I have often wondered whether you actually have (hold, keep, maintain for personal pleasure & oogling over) a collection, or if your involvement in numismatics is confined to this profitable specialty niche you're clearly so good at.

It's not necessarily my business -- but like I said, I've wondered.

I have never bought or sold a coin on E-bay. Obviously it is a very successful operation. The longer I deal in the coin realm the more I appreciate the concept of hands on review and close interactions with a few quality oriented and honest dealers.

    Interesting Poll RYK ... image

I voted #2 ... but it might be a more than 20%, depending on any one period of time. Sometimes worthwhile things show up on eBay, sometimes they are found elsewhere. I just keep looking for things on my list and that I like, where ever I might find them.

Sure wish I could find a few more image

I buy from eBay sellers all the time. I'm not sure I understand those who are voting 0% -- where else are you finding a market that has tens of thousands of coins for sale, week after week?

That said, the stuff I buy on eBay tends to be the lower dollar amount stuff, while the higher value stuff I get from Heritage or other dealers. But if I saw a nice piece on eBay, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it (after reviewing feedback and all the other potential gotchas, of course).

It's now officially 0%. Never spent much on eBay anyway, just mint and proof sets for filling albums (years ago), and the occasional better piece from the same few well known (to me) dealers.

As of last week, my account was hijacked, and I've since shut it down. Fortunately, I caught it before any damage was done, but that's it for me and eBay. image

  • I usually only buy cheaper coins on ebay, mostly to look at em or if it looks like I might like em... For more expensive coins (relative term here) I have bought most from the board members.

I don't even have an eBay ID anymore.

    Which brings up the question:

    100% for me.

But imagine my search criteria is limiting.

in the gold coin section, for half eagles, "pcgs -indian -198* -199* -200*"

Then among these sellers, you can find the honest dealers as well as collectors
    looking to unload.

Looking among these, I judge which one I like the best, and purchase it with a money
    order via snail mail.

10 coins bought so far, one on the way, no problems whatsoever.

I am picky though with maybe 12-25 coins per week to look at.

50% straight from the mint, 20% from a local shop, 20% from the Santa Clara show, 10% from Ebay.

Have only made one ebay purchase. But that one purchase being over $6000.00 brings my percentage way up. image

Based upon the results so far, Why the heck do we have so many ebay related posts? Since we don't buy on ebay lets agree to not post about it.

ive bought two coins with intent to resell for more (it was successful) and one coin for my dad. i have, however, sold a good number of NGC/PCGS slabbed 63 morgans i picked up at a local coin shop for 30.00 for a nice lil profit on ebay =)

That's one of the reasons I started the poll. I suspected that this might be the result. Given that about 40% of the people who responded buy few or none of their coins on ebay, it is amazing how preoccupied the membership is with ebay issues.
