How specific is your collection?

Mine isn't too specific. I'm working on the following:

1. Dansco 7070 Type Set
2. Dansco Peace Dollar Album
3. NGC Graded Morgan Dollar Year Set
4. Proof Sets (1959 to Present)
5. Modern Commemoratives (Missing a bunch)
6. PCGS Graded Peace Dollar Set (Only one coin in that set!)

Who collects only 1 or 2 types of coins and that's it??

Barber Halves only. Was doing a strick VF set, then expanded it to a VF/XF set to accomodate the beautiful XF coins I came across, and then later added some wiggle room for those exceptionally nice AU coins that I found now and then. VF-AU set. Completed six months ago after five years of collecting them.

I'm with you. It's not what I collect....it's what I'm actively collecting right NOW.

    1) Type set (Active)
    2) Circulated 2-cent (Dormant)
    3) Low MS 3-cent nickels (Glimmer of activity)
    4) Walker short set, MS-64 (Dormant, but looking)
    5) F-XF Standing Quarters (Long Dormant)
    6) Drapped Bust Halves, Fine (Forced into dormancy due to $$)
    7) Good coins at a good price, which may or may not be the same thing as a type set (Always Active!!)
    Easily distracted Type Collector
  • Bust Half dollars
Barber quarters both MS and proof
    Nicely toned Buffalo nickels.
    $10 Indian Eagles
    $20 Gold type

    That's about it.

I used to be all over the board when I started collecting. Everything from Morgans to half cents. As my collecting has matured I've settled (very happily) to four lightside collections; Capped Bust Half Dimes, Dimes, Quarters and Half Dollars. Now that my lightside is all squared away it seems my darkside collecting has been all over the place lol

Business strike Barber Dimes (complete, now expensive to upgrade)
Business strike Barber Half Dollars (complete but with a few cleaned hole fillers which have to go)
Dansco 7070 tyoe set (4 gold holes left, no hideous dogs, but room for improvement)

    That's it.

  • I am becoming very specific. I recently decided to sell the bulk of my collection (the very few pieces I am keeping were gifts and one give away from this forum) and use the proceeds to pursue the key coins I have wanted as long as I have been a collector. This collection will grow very slowly, but WILL contain the following coins:

    1921 Peace $1 PCGS MS63+
    1928 $1 PCGS MS63+
    1934 S $1 PCGS MS63+
    1916 D 10c PCGS XF-AU
    1932 D 25c PCGS MS64+
    1932 S 25c PCGS MS64+
    1909 S VDB 1c PCGS XF-AU
    1914 D 1c PCGS XF-AU
    1922 Plain 1c PCGS XF-AU
    1955 DDO 1c PCGS XF-AU
    1937 D 3 Leg 5c PCGS AU+
    1942/1 10c PCGS AU+
    (1) PCGS MS65+ DMPL CC $1 (Any date)
    1903 O $1 PCGS MS63+
    1893 S $1 PCGS VF-XF
    1995 W SAE PCGS PR69DC
    1877 1c PCGS AU+
    (1) PCGS MS64+ St. Gaudens $20 (Any date)
    1893 O 50c PCGS XF-AU
    1916 25c PCGS XF-AU

Once I own these 20 coins (a good 20+ years from now) I will consider doing a complete date and mint mark set of a specific series. Until then I am all about the box of twenty and whatever "smoking deals" happen to come my way.

Edited to add: Not just any coins will do. All will be solid for their grades and have superior eye appeal. No "crack out" candidates and no "coffin" slabs. Just the real deal through and through.

  • finally down to CC Morgan Dollars and Vamsimage

  • Canadian circulation strikes from KM # 1. The rest is pocket change.
  • I am doing a dollar design set, high grade, and a lot of fun.

My second set is a "presidential" set. It is a variety of any coin featuring a president, Proof, MS and Toners, all high grade. This one includes commemoratives.

Mine is pretty open ended although there is a method to my madness.

U.S. circulating coin design Type set - all metals
U.S. "old" commemorative silver coin set
U.S. "new" commemorative coin set - most issues.
Set of Lincoln cents, 1909 to sometime in the 1970s from childhood
    Indian $2.50 gold set 1908 - 1929
19th Presidential campaign medalets and other political pieces - Includes political hard times and Diivl War tokens.
New England area Civil War token merchant set
Selected merchant Civil War tokens, with a design set of John Marr designed pieces from Millwaukee, WI
U.S. Proof sets 1942 to date
Red Book set of the early half dimes, 1792 - 1805
Silver BU set of Roosevelt dimes
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Pretty specific... early commems, PCGS or NGC graded, with nice and unique toning image
image...There's always time for coin collecting. image
  • Very specific. My collection:

    Lincoln cents 1936-

    Modern Commems 1989-2000

    Prestige sets 1990-1997

    Silver Proof sets 1954-63

    Silver Proof sets 1996-

I did not start collecting until soon after I married in '96. Some of the collection was given to me by an uncle who moved on to other ventures. His collection started in the mid fifties so any coins before 1954 I acquired on my own.
You will note that the only raw coins I have are Lincoln cents.

Pretty specific: Dahlonega and New Orleans gold (with emphasis on half eagles) and $3's, with occasional other early, proof, or rare date gold issues.

    You asked for it image

Dansco 7070 type set (2/3 complete or thereabouts)
Circulated only early commemorative type set (very slow going to find 'em)
    Foreign Gold coin (anything appealing)
US large size currency by Type
    First Issue Fractional (Postage) Currency
    Classic era (1847-1932) US Stamps
    Pre-code horror comics (particularly EC)
Any 1950's era Gibson Les Paul, Fender Strat or Tele I can find (guitars, for them who don't know image )
Any blues recording by any artist, prior to the mid '60's or so

As you can see, I'm 'bout as focused as buckshot. I've actually begun selling off quite a bit of stuff lately (with all proceeds going into MORE stuff), and have been narrowing my focus. The comics, guitars and records are going, and probably the foreign gold, large size currency, and commems. So, by the end of the year, I'll be down to stamps, postage currency and a Dansco 7070 set.

Dansco 7070 - about 6 or 7 coins left, but always upgrading
Eisenhowers - not proofs, always looking and upgrading
    Silver proof sets
And what usually gets me into trouble, I'll collect any coin that I like the looks of..
  • I'm probably the most "specific" collector posting so far......... "My" collection is Seated Halves by date / mint / die variety as attributed by WB#........... 248 different individual halves so far, and I'm still searching for 64 more................ I collect business strike coins / varieties only......... While I do have a large accumulation of some other very choice / rare coins, they're simply "widgets" !!!!!!!!!

Oh yeah........... AND NO MODERN CRAP !!!!!!!!!!!! image

    3 "DAMMIT BOYS"
    4 "YOU SUCKS"
Numerous POTD (But NONE officially recognized)
