1794 Dollar Value

I was just reading Cardinal's fine book on 1794 dollars and was astonished at his valuation for the MS66 specimens. If one of the three were to come on the market unreserved, how much do you think it would fetch?

    It's just estimate. Who knows, but my guess is less than the 5 mil estimate.

    Given that some Bozo paid almost $100 grand for the "ultimate" 1909-S-VDB (according to one of today's posts), an MS-66 1794 Dollar should be worth at least a million. There is nothing rare about a 1909-S-VDB, and after a while the ultra grade nonsense is going to lead some of these people to a sad day of reckoning. image

    But stuff like a 1794 dollar is so far out of my ken, that I’ve have a hard time hazarding a guess. In fairness such a historic coin with about 125 survivors should be worth $500,000 to $750,000.
    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    The MS61 in the Sig Sale is at 316K, including BP, so far.

    OK, like I said, I don't know these markets. And maybe no one else does either, because the speculation factor has really kicked in.

    In the past it was impossible to get a million or more for a coin that had a population of 125 pieces, even if it was the finest knonw. Now-a-days it's different.

    Beside's a million bucks is not what it used to be. I got a net worth of over a million on paper, and I sure don't feel rich. image

    I definitely agree with you there.

    The best way to value these coins is on a relative basis. Go back and see what they brought in the past decades and compare them to other coins of similar stature. Then see if any of these coins have sold recently and for what price. For instance:

    In 1991, the Carter SP66 [65 then image ] sold for $506,000. In 1995, the Rogers MS66 sold for $577,500. Comparable coins in that time period were:

    Carter 1885 trade dollar @ $242,000 in 1993. Eliasberg 1894-S dime @ $451,000 in 1996.

    The Carter 1885 sold a year ago or so for about $1.2M. A gem 1894-S dime just sold in auction for about $1,050,000. Taking the comparative ratios [506k/242k * 1200k and also 577.5k/451k * 1050k] would lead one to valuations of approximately $2,500,000 and $1,350,000 respectively.

    I have three 1794's, and it is fun to look at Cardinal's book, and dream of his valuations. image Contursi is marketing the "greatness" of his SP66, but who would even pay more than $3 million??? Take Cardinals valuations on the top 10, and then take off 2/3's...

    The Bass 61 should go for $600,000 or more. I'll be surprised if it doesnt.

    TDN, didn't the coin that Andy Lustig had in 1988-1990 (?) get purchased for a million bucks back then? If so, that would be a million dollars paid for a coin with 125 known more than 15 years ago.
