Any good reasons to have a famous pedigree removed??

LakesammmanLakesammman Posts: 17,660 ✭✭✭✭✭
Just had the Eliasberg pedigree put back on a PCGS coin I bought. Can't figure out why the original pedigree was missing.

Any good reasons to have a famous pedigree removed?? (Not referring to pseudo-famous registry pedigrees - those SHOULD be removed!! imageimage).

Not sure why anyone would remove an Eliasberg pedigree, either. What is the process to have it reissued?

I hear that Norweb is an automatic removal.

I have asked this before, and the best answer I have heard is that someone selling the coin might not want a buyer to know what it previously graded (probably lower) and what was the price paid in the auction (also probably lower).

In my experience, the most common reason I have seen pedigrees removed, has been where someone has gotten an upgrade and doesn't want a subsequent purchaser of the coin to be aware of it.image

I think it's a sad and a shame, but it happens quite often.

Thanks - must have missed the earlier threads......image Makes sense, I guess, althought the grade wasn't really in issue with this coin.

some pedigrees have a negative connotation. for example, do you really want your slabs to have the "wannabe a legend" pedigree???

but seriously, i've cracked coins out of "name" pedigreed slabs w/o hesitation.

Good example of one you'd want to remove: "Omaha Bank Hoard"

The guy who used to own this coin (oh, and a few others):

A crackout artist might want to lose the pedigree (and the slab) if they thought it could go 64 submitted raw, for example.

Lake: depends. If that coin is in a 64 holder and the grade in the catalog is 45, then yeah... probably makes sense.

Who has ever seen them both in the same place at the same time?????

More importantly, who would want to see them in the same place at the same time! imageimage

Good point, TDN. I think it was 64 or 65 - will check again tonight. Getting too old to remember.

Bowers was a bit generous grading the small cent patterns in the catalog - currently P64, weakly struck since it's a 25% nickle die trial.

A PCGS MS65 Eliasberg widet is worth 10k, cracked out, then NCSed, then to NGC where it gets a grade of MS67 worth 25k(w/o pedigree). LOTS of people would remove a pedigree for that.
    Collecting since 1976.

A number of Eliasberg and Pittman coins for example received stupidly high grades. Some of those dullards are still searching for homes. And in order to sell them one would naturally want to get as far as way from the Pedigrees as possible as everyone knows the coin already.

When I die, no one would even think think of having this pedigree removed!!!

It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!
