are you into $3 gold? by date? type? decade? civil war era? mintmark set?

michaelmichael Posts: 9,524 ✭✭

would you consider getting a nice xf/au, au/unc., choice unc., proof strike for type

or maybe a different mintmark set of threes

or a coin of each decade produced 1850's 60's 70's 80's

or maybe a civil war set 1861-65

possibly one of the under 1000 minted sexy dates of the 1880's

or maybe the one year type 1854 coin with the SMALL dollars lettering

or possibly one of the three really rare dates that have around 100-200 known of each date 1858? 1864? 1865? 1877?

or maybe you will do a complete set ????

Michael---The 1854 is the only date with"DOLLARS" in SMALL letters.

or maybe a civil war set 1861-65

Yes, but I am missing the 1862. Have you seen a nice AU lately?

or maybe a different mintmark set of threes

Yes, but I only have the 54-O.

possibly one of the under 1000 minted sexy dates of the 1880's

    Yes, I have the 1883.

or possibly one of the three really rare dates that have around 100-200 known of each date 1858? 1864? 1865? 1877?

Yes, I have all of these but the 1877, which is, by far, the toughest one of the group.

I like the $3 gold, but I am not that much into them that I would want to put together a complete set. For some reason, though, I like the look of circulated $3, and I would like to buy some F/XF pieces. Out of the gold issues, they look the best with a little wear on them (of course, if someone was giving me a proof $3, I would not reject it image

It takes "a big boy" to collect $3 gold coins by date and mint. Or you have to be a collector who is willing to pay several hundred dollars for circulated gold coins. I've never been much of a fan of circulated gold that grades less than AU-50. I got spoiled by nice Mint State gold when I was young collector and have never made the adjustment. image

Right now I own an 1854 $3 gold in PCGS MS-63. It's much better than the average MS-63 graded piece.

I believe that there are two types of $3 gold pieces, the 1854 "small dollars" type and the later coins where the word was roughly twice as large. Some day, I'll buy an example of the large dollar type, but for now I'll have to be happy with the one piece I have.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Here is an example of the second type:

I love $3's, but I do not have the resources to go for the full set. There are some extremely expensive circulation issues (ie. 54-D $3) and proof-only issues, which make the series out of reach for me.

Instead, I will pick off choice AU examples of better and more interesting dates when I can.

I'll get one when I expand my gold type set to a 12 coin set instead of the 8 coin set and the 3 $1 pieces will probably be nabbed first, so it is far down the list for me.....

that 1879 of pinnacles is superb i think the mintage off of the top of my head is 3000 but clapp in some of his early 20th century auction cats states that just over 2000 of these coins where never releaSED AND melted

so this is a great coin at a fantastic price

Actually, $3 gold is what got me to start serious collecting. I actually put together a Registry Set. I am looking forward to receipt of David Bower's recent book on the subject of $3 gold.
