Very active in Jeffersons, kind of put my Lincolns off to the side since they have become so expensive.

Same thing I've been collecting for over 20 years - Lincoln cent die varieties. Why? Because they are challenging.

Crusty and sometimes pretty Bust halves. The uglier nasty ones with old gunk the better.
Why?..... So many ways to collect this series. They can be collected for their history, by variety,
by edge errors, and what I like is the messed up faces (double profiles.)

And when I can pick up a nicely toned piece from 1955 which is tough to find I do so.
Problem is some folks don't want to cut loose with them even if they can get "Stupid Money" for them.

    You know anybody like that?image

  • Lincoln proofs 1950-58 in PR67RD/PR67RD CAM - because I bought the first three coins a few years ago at a good price. Still looking for that '56 in PCGS PR67RD CAM! I may move back into the 36-42 proofs next.

Jefferson nickel varieties - because I like them and think some are a good value.

Jefferson nickel toned coins - because I like them and think some are a good value, particularly high-grade, problem-free, spectacularly album toned examples.

Buffalo nickel, Mercury dime & Walking Liberty half proofs - because these are arguably the pinnacle of US Mint nickel and silver design. I wish they would have made some Standing Liberty quarter proofs!

Beautifully toned & high grade nickle type set - because I'm trying to expand my horizons.

1963 DCAM proof set - because it's my birthyear.

1996 & 2001 coin sets - because that's my kid's birthyears. Initially I had in mind to eventually assemble all coins made for these years including the various Eagles, but there are over 50 coins for 1996 and I don't know how many for 2001! For the kind of money it would take to do this, I'm seriously considering going back 100 years to 1896 & 1901 to find additional coins for these sets.

  • Mainly focused on my type set -- I still have the Barbers and Seated coins to go, and some of the older coins (especially in gold), but otherwise the type set's looking pretty nice. I'm also half-heartedly collecting MS 3 cent nickels. Why? Because it's tough and relatively cheap (especially compared to those gold coins).
  • Well,

I am desperately searching for a photograph of the Chelsea Piers at 13th St. in NY c. 1902-1915. Oh, you meant a coin image

Great question. I am addicted to Jefferson Nickels. I started collecting them in slabs because they seemed inexpensive (at first) compared to other coins. Once I got a high quality - high greade coin in superb condition I was hooked. I started collecting in the early 1970's when I was about 10 years old. I started with barber dimes from the junk boxes. After a 30 year break I started up again because the stock market was falling and I thought I would buy some gold. My brother told me to go to Ebay and check under coins- At that point I quit looking for bullion and said to my self" Hey I think I still have my collection of barber dimes(I did and some of the junk box dimes I paid under a dollar for are worth 20.00 and up.) Well needless to say with Ebay and disposable income I was off. I made friends with a small dealer in upstate NY who took the time to explain how things worked on ebay and he would send me partial collections he had bought from local in his area. Everytime he sold me a new type of coin, I got hooked on that area of collecting. I went from barber dimes to lincoln cents to washingtom quarters to roosevelt dimes to morgan dollars to walker 1/2's then to Jefferson nickels. And it was at that point that I feel in love with this much neglected modern beauty. Since then I have completed a collection of raw nickels and I am at 90% on my 1938-1964 collection and my 1938-present collection. I still pick up an ocasional coin that is not a Jefferson ( for example I fofilled my childhood dream of owning a 1909 S VDB--it is a PCGS slab of course) So now I have the awesome task of finding the coins that I need to finish my collections in raw condition so I can take advantage of my free gradings. After all this I want to say that the greatest enjoyment I have gotten from collecting coins in general and PCGS coins in particular is meeting the friendly helpful folks who "prowl" the boards and lend there time and talents to help a new comer. In particular I want to thanks FULL STEP JEFFS. For the longest time I cursed this guy on ebay because he always bid against me. As it turns out this fine gentleman and member of the US military has been my friend and counsel in the area of coins. As you may know he is leaving for Iraq and he will me missed dearly. Well I have rambled to much and will close now with a thanks you. Don/mademan and friend of Steve AKA full step jeffs-Godspeed

I'm basically doing the contents of a 7070 type album, although nearly all recent acquisitions are in plastic & I haven't yet decided to crack any out. My operating logic is to get so pretty a coin I won't want to upgrade, while staying within my means. Hard to explain -- this has meant one figure coins for some holes and four figure coins for others, VG for some and MS65 for others -- but I seem to be on a roll as far as overall satisfaction w/ recent purchases goes. I've got a few subgoals within the set, too -- gold from each mint, for instance. I'm getting close on that one. I've made a few expansions outside the 7070 -- early quarters, and, I hope, eventually early dollars & halves. I'd like a $3, too. Maybe if I finish this someday I'll have to add early 10c & 5c too. We'll see. I'm enjoying the heck out of it, far more than I did my mercury set, for instance.

  • Collecting Lincolns. Went back to my roots and said the heck with silver. Lost too much collecting raw silver. The only silver I have is in proof sets. This is the only way I know they have not been messed with.
  • Silver, Peace dollars mainly. Because I like them, and I only have to 2 right now. I also like IKE and Kennedy proofs, I'll pretty much snatch up any I come across.

#1 Lincoln Cents, #2 clad quarters 65-98, #3 Jefferson Nickels 38-date, #4 clad Roosevelt Dimes...

Why? Basically I'm collecting everything from 2005 backwards to 1965, then someday 1934, then someday 1900, then someday... Anyway, cents back to 1909 seemed like the natural choice of which denomination to get a good start on for the early twentieth century coins. I really love them! What a large impressive set that will be once it is done! It's got everything... classics, moderns... tons of varieties if you like that... and just such a large amount of history goes with it. Jefferson Nickels had been my #2 set for lots of the same reasons, but I got hooked lately on the clad quarters and have been working on them more.

    Darkside and Dansco typeset.....

Typeset because it is challenging to learn to grade a new series and Darkside because it's just plain cool!!image Oh, and Darkside gold is so yummy, beautiful and cheap!! It doesn't get any better than that.

Coins & dead ancestors. . .image

Morgan dollar VAMs, key dates of any series and I'm trying to start a 19th Century type set but I keep getting outbid since I not familiar with the actual prices for which some some of these coins obviously sell.

    Why?

VAMs are addictive, the thrill of the hunt etc. . . Key dates because they are key dates and the 19th Century type set because those coin designs are head and shoulders better than anything 20th Century or beyond.

As evident from the answers, people collect a wide variety of coins. I've always thought this is one of the neat things about collecting coins, there are some many choices of what and how to collect.

Just updated my type set some, and I'm currently working on the year set of Morgan slabbed dollars. Need most of the tough years yet (92, 93, 94, 95 and 03). I need only the 93 and the 95 for my raw year Morgan set (AU to MS64).
I get sidetracked sometimes and buy MS65 or better Mercury dimes and also Choice AU and better Walking Liberty half dollars as well.
    I love it all!

Recently modern commemortive four and six piece sets in the wooden boxes with all of the papers.

To me they are like "poor man's Pan Pac sets." With a couple of exceptions that current selling prices are well below the issue prices, and the coins and presentations are very attractive IMO. In some cases you can buy these coins at almost the melt price if you are in the right place at the right time.

In a way some of these sets are becoming an endangered species because many of them are broken up and put into slabs. They can be re-assembled, but that usually costs more than if you buy the complete set in the first place.

I've got just one set to go - the 1994 World Cup Soccor 6 piece set.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

  • I completed my circulated Lincoln cents and Indian cents not too long ago. I then wandered for a while by picking up various type coins to see what I liked. I am now hooked on seated liberties and enjoying it!

    Edited for miss spelling.
  • I'm collecting mint state walkers & am enjoying putting together a '65-Present jefferson proof nickle set. Plans are to finish the whole walker set(1916-1947), but that will take time. It's a beautiful series. I added a couple of walkers to my '33-'47 registry set this last week that pushed me into the Top 20 which was kind of a goal, but I'm kind of in a holding pattern until I can put more funds together. In the meantime I'm working on the jeff series and 60% complete. In fact I picked up a '67 SMS PR66DCAM coin from a forum member tonight to fill in one of the harder to find ones.
