How do you collectors with significant others do it?

I finalized hocking the house today, and purchased two cc dmpl morgans today also. How would you
break this news to your spouse? This would take a real pro. Would like to hier from both sides of the wedding ring.

I really feel for you all that don't have a spouse that collects and enjoys this hobby as much as you do....it is alot funner to have a wife that is also your partner in your coin collecting.....

2. I tell her when I get a "good" upgrade.
3. I buy her whatever she wants.
Must be number 1 that does it!

Me: "Honey look at this cool coin I just got!"
Her: (Pretends to ignore me)
Me: "Honey, check this out!"
Her: (Looks up, eyes roll deeply back into head, sighs)
Me: "Isn't it a beauty?"
Her: (Nods head, resumes ignoring me)
Me: "Hey kids! Look at the cool coin daddy just got!"

2. I make it a point to show her Ebay sales that I've made money on.
3. When she wants to buy something I don't disagree.
4. While I show her some of the stuff I buy, I don't make a point of it unless she asks.
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
We each have some money we can spend any way we want and we have seperate checking accounts and credit cards as well as joint accounts for bills. This helps reduce loads of arguments. After all if she criticized my spending I would probably look closer at hers

If something really great came up, we could talk about some "advance payments" when I borrowed against future month's allowances. But that was unusual.
Of course I get the occaisional "You spent $400 on a quarter?"

<< <i>I don't have a significant other yet... but I would think the best way to counteract a big purchase, is to present her with some jewelry of approximately the same value... that way, she thinks you do care about her more than your coins, and you're spending as much on her as yourself... >>
This doesn't work unless you're loaded because it basically doubles your coin budget (less coins), the best thing to do is get them a gift and make them think that it is comparable to what you are spending. My wife is into designer purses so I let her get one every 2 to 3 months. It makes me feel less guilty but it is still a fraction of what I spend on my collectibles.
If you own a Chain Cent, show your wife Mark Ferguson's Coin Values column in the latest Coin World (arrived today.) He shows a VF20 Chain saying it has appreciated from $8500 in 2000 to $30K today. The obvious question she then asked, "Do you have one of those?" I answer, "Yup," and see the smile.
