My next Coin Vault - Robert Chambers question....

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,790 ✭✭✭✭✭
So,

I've emailed them before and asked them why I would want to buy coins from them that I see them handling on TV with their bare, pudgy, fingers.
(Response was that those were "demo" coins and not ones to be sent out).

After last night, I am thinking, seriously, of calling their ordering dept......stating that I am looking to buy ~50 SAE Proofs (2005) for gifts, collection, etc.
Then, I would pause, and ask.....hold it....before I finalize the order, can you help me understand what makes yours, for $59.96 each, so special since someone just told me the US Mint has these currently forsale for under $30??????
I will still buy them if you can tell me why they are so special as to be twice the price.

THAT, is what I am leaning towards doing....I really really want to...I just have to have a phone near me at home when I am thinking of it.

Ya know, if it were me on that show (first off, it wouldn't be me...too honest for my own good), I would still sell them, with a markup, but say "you can either get these from us and our great payment options, or you can get them from the USMint while supplies last there, which is unknown, and at which point, all prices go up.
etc etc etc.

Damn Robert Chambers and that other dork that he works with!

Ok...I've been sick lately, so I've been going to bed early, but starting to feel better...someone PM me next time it is on...I live on the West Coast, so, most of you are east coasters and will see it before me...that will give me time for the headsup.

Yeah...it is replayed up here in Seattle around that time too....BUT, going to bed early last night, I did notice it was also on around 9 or 10pm (I've been pretty sick so I took some meds to help me stop coughing and to sleep and was, admittedly, very drowsy and can't be sure of the time).
Anything prior to midnight PST is doable for me.

Does anyone know what Coin Vault pays to acquire its bulk inventory (i.e. 45 years of proof sets, 1960-2005,)? do they pay anywhere close to bid or ask, or do they buy at say 20% to 50% back of bid?

First off the person that answers has nothing to do with the price they are only poor working stiffs. It's Chambers that you want to get.

Quite odd...I was thinking the same thing this Morning....when you have them on the line, ask them about the Bison Nickels also...why they are charging twice as the mint.....

Oh, I plan on him too image

But, the person on the phone still lets people get totally ripped off. Yes, to some of them, they are just doing their job.......but, if you know someone is getting totally ripped off, and you "doing your job" allows it, do you think that is right?
    Hint....I don't!

Chambers is just a hired hand as well. Nothing but a mouth piece. But his lips sometimes slip and he talks about his bosses Leon and David. Those would be Leon and David Hendrickson. For a short period of time David even tried to host the show but either couldn't cut it or maybe the powers (Leon) felt it would be in their best interest to keep the connection hidden. If you don't know who Leon is, you might want to google him. Once you google him you will see why all the dealers are so mute in offering opinions on the subject.

Was checking out some of SAH's items, Washington Quarters to be exact.

Check out the location of the mints from this copy from one of their items..

A fabulous treat to coin collectors! Take the opportunity to add the 1932-1947 Washington Quarter Set to your collection. The set includes 42 different silver quarters except the 1932-D or 1932-S, but all other quarters from 1932-1947 in Pennsylvania, Denver and San Francisco mint marks. This set of coins comes in a protective Harris folder.

    The old Pennsylvania mint.

To add to my disgust on them last night (and, just for perspective, I normally just ignore them, look at the coins, and don't care), on the segment with the 2005 SAE proofs, they were showing the DCAM by using the red light from the camera. That's normal.

Well, they used the inside paperwork of the packaging to show it can be read in the fields...from about an inch away. Ya know, show it from 6 inches, 12 inches...something....don't do a stupid inch away.
Then, he was talking about how the fields show reflectivity......then switched to say how the fields don't reflect anything from even right up close. He MEANT "devices".
If he is such a numismatist as he says he is on the show, he should learn the difference. He can't call both the field AND the device "devices"!

The other night, another coin show was on (I think it was PAX). This was the most unorganized waste of time I have ever seen. Looked like two guys in a room with a portable camera doing the work. At least the Coin Vault is a professional presentation. I do have to wonder about the 100% markup on a current item. I was going to start a thread called "Who ya gonna call" where it was the mint or the coin vault for the same item, but you beat me to it with this thread.

I'd be glad if I could punch the screen everytime Paul Hollis said something retarded and he would actually feel it.

His voice is miserable as is that Adam guys, I've seen Paul do appraisals on TERRIBLE bagmarked coins (often on the show) and say that a 1964-D Quarter is worth 30$ in MS60.

I think his email is rchambers@shopathometv.com. Not sure of the email, but I emailed him last year and told him the PCGS Commemorative PF 70 Washington Commemmorative on their website was priced to high at $5000.00. I was surprised that he emailed me back and he said he would check out the website and see if this was the correct price. Sometimes, not very often they will list something on the web at a reasonable price and also make a mistake in their pricing in your favor on the web and they honor the price listed. Its rare but it does happen.

The Coin Vault folks are really a joke, in my opinion. I have mentioned the Silvertowne/Coin Vault connection before several times, but it seemed to fall on deaf ears. There are quite a few Dealers, NOT wannabees, who use Silvertowne as a dumping ground for all of the common rips they make in daily trasactions, it appears, I have a local dealer who won't sell anything to the public anymore, it all goes right to the SATH folks, or so he says.

I have called the show in the past when I have heard them make a statement that was baltantly false. This seemed to happen more often when Julie Tello was working with Mr. Chambers. I once stayed on hold for 45 minutes waiting for them to correct their statement, butr htey finally hung up on me...lol . Below was one of the topics in question, interetingly Ms. Tello or Sahun Leffler wasn't on the Coin Vault very often after I followed through on what I said I would do:

I know that everyone has their own feelings about the television Coin Shows. It seems that the Coin Vault on Shop at Home is probably the most successful of the bunch. As viewers know, they now "hawk" a tremendous amount of NGC graded material. I feel, in my opinion, that this is a good thing vis-a-vis the raw or third tier grading service stuff you see on some of the other networks.

Last night, however, Robert Chambers, who is the numismatist of the show if you will, took one huge step over the line.

Mr. Chambers is very fond of repeating, to the point of sickness, that NGC is the "Official Grading Service of the Hobby, the ANA".

Mr. Chambers spoke last night about how NGC is now the "Official Grading Service of ther PNG as well. NGC is now the preferred Grading Service of the two major watchdogs of the industry the ANA and the PNG".

    OK so far I guess.

Then he went over the line. He blatantly lied about what the significance of the PNG "endorsement" meant. To paraphrase; " This isn't an endorsement like some of the shoe companies you see who are the "Official Shoe of Football. Those endorsements are simply the result of who will pay the most money to get the endorsement. The PNG has selected NGC as it's offical grading service because of its stellar reputation in the industry, not because NGC bought it."

Julie Tello, who was on the show too even made the comment that"So NGC didn't have to pay to get this endorsement, it is a reward for NGC being the best?"

Mr. Chambers then reiterated his statements about the shoe company analogy and that the endorsement had nothing to do with money.

I am a relatively calm person, but this out and out lie really pi**ed me off. I called the show and told them that Mr. Chambers was lying and that he knows better. He knows that NGC paid over $500,000 for the endorsesment , and that he is deceiving people into thinking NGC Coins have some additional value due to the PNG endorsement. I demanded a retraction or I would file a complaint against Shop at Home, Robert Chambers and Julie Tello with the appropriate agencies in Tennessee, and the FTC.

They had me on hold for about 30 minutes saying they had a manager talking to Chambers. They came back on the phone to me 3 times and asked if I would like to continue to hold, or could they call me back. I asked to be kept on hold. Finally the line went dead.

I have contacted the following organizations today. The ANA, PNG, NGC, FTC and the Tennessee Dept. of Economic & Comm. Dev.

Selling coins at what could be percieved at "blue sky" prices is one thing, lying to accomplish it is another.

    All in my opinion.

    Greg
