    Russ -

Your posts are always a good read, but I have to wonder why you haven't been discreetly buying and slabbing/upgrading your Kennedys, rather than posting here, creating a buzz and having now a bunch of other guys chasing down all of the Kennedy's on eBay.

I'm guessing you're some kind of modern-day Kennedy-collecting Robin Hood.

    Good for you guys -

To be honest, I've thought about posting all sorts of interesting colonial census info but then I figured it would be used against me at some future auction by some creep with an elephantine wallet. I mean the size, not the skin.

    Fine work.

Just curious, what prompted you to send it to NCS rather than dipping it yourself?

Simple you can't dip it in the slab.

EXTREME mirror depth. On the SMS coins with mirrors this strong, a dip can sometimes cause field frost to emerge and reduce the glassiness, so I decided to let the pros handle this one.

You learned this from harsh trial/error?
I was wondering the same question since I know you know how to dip......

The 68 set I was chasing yesterday went to MM. The 70 set I was chasing went to Ken. The 65 set I was chasing went to Russ. The 72-P OBW roll of Ikes I won Brian (Gandyjai) bumped $40 with a late snipe. It ain't like it used to be. image

Thanks for the tips Russ, guess I just need to get a bigger hammer to get them DCams. Trust me Russ and Marty are not giving much away. They both have sniped me within the last week. But, I have also been able to pickup over a dozen sets with great coins in them. There are plenty of coins out there with all the different auction sites.

What was the grade as shown in the original holder in step 1? I'd search eBay for your past wins but I'm too lazy.

How did you identify the birthmark (hole in the head) on the first coin? It shows up great in the second pic.

    Edit for spelling

<< <i>What was the grade as shown in the original holder in step 1? >>

It was an MS65CAM. Probably looked much better when submitted, but hazed over while in for grading due to a crappy flip.

<< <i>How did you identify the birthmark (hole in the head) on the first coin? >>

That was actually a very pleasant surprise when the coin came in! I didn't even see it, only saw that the coin looked to have great frost and excellent mirrors under the gunk.

I don't understand why you didn't have NGC grade it after the time/expense of mailing etc.? Or is there a big PCGS-NGC price differential? I ask as I have 5 free subs at NGC and no coins to send.

<< <i>I don't understand why you didn't have NGC grade it after the time/expense of mailing etc.? >>

Because it was going in my PCGS registry set.

    << <i>Or is there a big PCGS-NGC price differential? >>

On these there is a HUGE value difference.

that truly has to be one of the big numismatic thrills....you have a coin which you think/know has upward QUALITY potential. One speaks of potential normally with regard to how the market sees it in the future. Here is a coin which literally had to be cleaned up to see its actual visual potential.

Russ then invests in the process, all the while wondering what that final look will be like on return from NCS, (he's very pleased for sure at this point) then sends it out and hopes for a good grade. Man, what a story! He now proudly has it in his registry!

Planchet chip. They're relatively common on SMS coins. Without it, it likely would be in a 68DCAM holder and worth about $6000.
