<< <i>Russ did NCS or ngc give it a grade? >>
I had them return it raw.

Your posts are always a good read, but I have to wonder why you haven't been discreetly buying and slabbing/upgrading your Kennedys, rather than posting here, creating a buzz and having now a bunch of other guys chasing down all of the Kennedy's on eBay.
I'm guessing you're some kind of modern-day Kennedy-collecting Robin Hood.

Marty and I were just talking about that today. We decided that we are our own worst enemies!
I don't know. I guess it's because for me this is all about having fun, and I like to share that fun!

Good for you guys -
To be honest, I've thought about posting all sorts of interesting colonial census info but then I figured it would be used against me at some future auction by some creep with an elephantine wallet. I mean the size, not the skin.
Just curious, what prompted you to send it to NCS rather than dipping it yourself?
<< <i>Simple you can't dip it in the slab. >>
Sure you can, all you need is a real strong hydrochloric acid solution.

<< <i>Care to explain the hammer part for those of us who have no idea what you're talking about?
That's the giveaway portion of this post
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
<< <i>Just curious, what prompted you to send it to NCS rather than dipping it yourself? >>
EXTREME mirror depth. On the SMS coins with mirrors this strong, a dip can sometimes cause field frost to emerge and reduce the glassiness, so I decided to let the pros handle this one.

You learned this from harsh trial/error?
I was wondering the same question since I know you know how to dip......

<< <i>I am curious how much the NCS fees were? >>
In this case, $18 plus shipping.
<< <i>You learned this from harsh trial/error? >>
Yep. That's pretty much how I learn anything - by screwing up!

What was the grade as shown in the original holder in step 1? I'd search eBay for your past wins but I'm too lazy.
Edit for spelling
<< <i>What was the grade as shown in the original holder in step 1? >>
It was an MS65CAM. Probably looked much better when submitted, but hazed over while in for grading due to a crappy flip.
<< <i>How did you identify the birthmark (hole in the head) on the first coin? >>
That was actually a very pleasant surprise when the coin came in! I didn't even see it, only saw that the coin looked to have great frost and excellent mirrors under the gunk.

<< <i>I don't understand why you didn't have NGC grade it after the time/expense of mailing etc.? >>
Because it was going in my PCGS registry set.
<< <i>Or is there a big PCGS-NGC price differential? >>
On these there is a HUGE value difference.

Russ then invests in the process, all the while wondering what that final look will be like on return from NCS, (he's very pleased for sure at this point) then sends it out and hopes for a good grade. Man, what a story! He now proudly has it in his registry!

<< <i>Russ, what is the "dot" that appears to be to the right of the "9"? >>
Planchet chip. They're relatively common on SMS coins. Without it, it likely would be in a 68DCAM holder and worth about $6000.
