If it were me, I would have chosen a wheelchair basketball design rather than Ms. Shriver's profile. She certainly deserves credit for doing some terrific things to help those with mental retardation and physical handicaps. image

I have wondered if all of the mintage of these actually sold.
The mintage was quite high compared to most of the other commemoratives about this time.

No, we're making fun of the bust of her that appears on the coin. In real life, she's not a bad looking woman for her age. The designer of this coin is lucky she didn't sue him.

Yes, but how many of these unattractive portraits make certain coin collectors repeatedly shriek in pain, shiver, or curse? Yes, we've revisited this one a few times already, but good cliches are established for good reason. This haggard portrait has to win some awards among coin designs as whatever award Henny Youngman's "take my wife...please" won.

Saying that 90% of stand-up comics rework old material doesn't single out the most celebrated culprits, and BigE's statement rationalizes away the most hideous designs. The maligned Shriver Commememorative is, in my mind, as much of our little corner of culture as a a Don Rickles "hockey puck" is to comedy.

And besides, Sargent Shriver is too classy of a guy to take out a contract on the designer of this one. He even smiled upon hearing Frank Zappa and the Mothers sing "Who Needs the Peace Corps?"

Its one coin... get over it. And if this commemorative helped with the Special Olympics in any way, then it served its purpose.

Was Jackie-O still alive in 1995? I would think she would have been horrified by this coin, given she had a problem with a few errant hairs on her husband's portrait!!

I think Phoenix Life Insurance Company, a major Spec. Olympics sponser, bought 50,000 or so of these coins and then unloaded them on their employees and gave them away as promotional gifts.
