1901P Morgan opinions wanted

Just sent in for grading. What do you think. Coin has subaverage lustre, softer strike, but is very very clean. Opinions are welcome!image

Hard to see the luster on the obverse.

Looks like an AU-50 to me. It was probably dipped long ago, but that has not hurt it very badly.

The Gray Sheet "bid" in this coin goes from $265 in AU to $1,500 in MS-60. Given that gap, the middle AU grades really mean something. An AU-58 with great eye appeal can sell for over $1,000. A really nice AU can bring $500 to $750.

This coin falls short of those levels. It might pull an AU-53 which would put it in the $250 to $300 class.

this is one of those coins where you can lose your butt if you overgrade it. AU bid is $265. MS-63 bid is $11,500. Many of the MS-63 graded 1901-P dollars that I have seen looked like hell. image

There is sure-fire rub on the eagle's breast on the reverse, and I see rub in the fields and Ms Liberty's cheek.

Bill, ANR has an MS-63, 1901 listed for 14,500. The best one I've ever seen. image

Good for him! It's a tough coin.

One that sticks in my mind was an MS-63 graded piece that was in an NGC holder. It was as dull and black as a tarball. image How one could call that MS-63 is beyond me.

BUT hey you could have owned for at BID!!!!! imageimage
