Are Barber dimes in MS66 a good set to start now?

They are quite tiny...and there are very few. And there are not many collectors from what I see. Maybe that makes his a good time to start a set??? It's a hard jump down from Saints.

Don't know about them as a set, but I've seen two kinds--white and nice. Buy the ones with original skin!!!

I would say it would be cheaper than the Saints, however I think they would be quite difficult to find with original color.

Most Unc. Barber coins I've seen of all denominations are ugly. If you're going to do this, before starting, be sure you can tell the diff. between an MS 66 and an MS 65. Also, be patient. You will be passing on quite a few coins.

I have VERY good mentors if I decide to do it.. The BEST in the biz, IMO. But that is good advice. I KNOW Saints...I don't really know Barbers. ANd I had NO idea that the cameo was a woman for 40 years!! That's some tough looking broad!image

    Saintguru,
That would be a fantastic set to accomplish. If Blay is still working on his, then you ll have some competition. Thier are some great Barbers in that upcoming sell.

Also, an aquaintence of mine knows the current whereabouts of the only PCGS graded 95-o In 66. (Possibly to be coming up for auction in the near future)I saw it at the ANA, and it is a stunner. Early green holder and super nice!!! I also I beleive thier are two other dates where only one 66 exisits (02-o, and the 92-o).

A lot of the Barber dimes I've seen appear to be dull and lifeless. I can't say whether it's due to way way they were made, from overdipping, or both. Gem MS coins are definitely hard to find, so if you enjoy a challenge, it's a good series. I see attractive Barber quarters with far greater frequency than dimes. They just seem to have nicer luster, and I like the eagle reverse better than the dime's wreath reverse. As Elcontador said, if you go with the dimes, you'll be passing on a lot of coins. I'll buy them if I can find any that suit my taste and my budget.

    Here's another 1897-P:

While I always say collect what you like, the Barber dimes will never have the cache of Saints. Being a Merc collector, I would love someone with your passion for collecting to build a high grade Merc set. Would that I had your resources, but that is the beauty of the Registry in that others can share your joy as you assemble a high end set. Good luck with whatever new series you begin!

With your Saint set nearly complete, I like the idea of starting a new series. Seated quarters/halves/dollars, Trade dollars and $3's come to mind. I prefer 19th century coins, and admittedly am not a big fan of the Barber design. Though I like the Barber dimes the best--they are "cute"-I can only take small coins in small doses. image

Good luck and keep us posted.

The Barber coins are really quiet for the most part in this market. The problem is that they are "Plain Jane" coins that don't have a lot of sex appeal. Collectors have felt that way about these coins for many years. When I was a YN, the old time collectors I knew did not get very excited about the Barber series.

To me dimes are the dullest of the lot. I like the eagle on the reverse of the quarters and the half dollars. The dime is just of copy of the 19th century reverse, which has never done too much for me.

Having said all of this negative stuff, I'll say this. You will bust your tail trying to find these coins in true MS-66 with their original skins. They will cost you less money than your Saint collection (unless you need to have the 1894-S), but they were just as hard if not harder to find.

I don't think you can get a complete set in MS66. Some of the dates are very scarce. I check the NGC pop report (I don't have the on-line PGCs one) and there is not a MS66 graded coin for every date and mintmark. Some have a pop less than 5. I think even if you have the money for MS66 coins, you may have to wait awhile for some to come on the market. That 1894-S is a killer too image

Clearly I can't get the entire set in ms66...but that would be my baseline...I have to establish a quality level to work from. I don't think I'd go lower that ms65. IF I DO IT. SOOO CONFUSEDimage

try doing a set in stringent vf w/ well-matched, ORIGINAL coins.

very tough. i think a set in ms-66 would almost be easier!

Are you willing to do a set where you probably can never own either of the top two specimens of each date/mintmark? Not sure I would be....

Bruce...you KNOW I would...we went through this regarding the Saints. My goal is and always will be to have the finest set "quality" possible in lieu of a completed set. It's just a case of personal choice. I love GEM coins and 95% in mostly MS66 would speak for itself.

If I ever went to sell them, the prices realized would not reflect the completion of the set...it would reflect the quality and consistency, IMO.

    Saintguru:

You are projecting a fear for a couple collectors of the series: Blay and Sperber. I know their mouths are watering waiting for the "Heritage barber show" at FUN. If you are truly going to start this new set of yours, you will NOT get a chance to buy coins like the one's coming up again for a long time, IMO. (Stewart asked me if I was going to go after any!!!) I am not a barber fan, but some of those may temp me.

I want the magnificent 1894-s, but then I would have to sell my right arm, kidneys, etc...

I've been quiet about the barber dimes, but I collect them too as well as my mercs. I have a handful in MS65 but no 66 like you are getting. They are too much for me image
