I heard really fast, I believe, because of the "persuasive" letter I wrote!

    << <i>Dear. J.Ordo
We are sick and tired of just talking about Barry's drug problem and stuff. We would like a non-sport
forum or we are going to go on a rampage and send viruses to all your customers and only submit our cards to PSG which I am the founder.

Really cool card! Thanx for sharing. I didn't know that Topps printed in that language.

LOL - I think it was the PGS threat that did it! Gettin' a little too hot in the kitchen.

Steve - I love that Yiddish Target Moon card; did you get it on ebay from the same guy who puts them up every once in a while? Aside from just being a cool addition, what do you know about its provenance? Is it truly a 45+ year old card or just a very funny goof?

I just got a complete set that I'd been searching for for a long time. I've always dug the 1961 Golden Press set (33 HOFers in booklet form). I've got an intact book, and I love it - besides the great art work, it has one of the only cards of Dizzy Dean and Joe DiMaggio that I ever saw as a kid. The set I saw once was a Golden Press Presidents set. It said 1961 in the listing, but I think it is 1960, no later, since there's no Kennedy card and the Eisenhower card doesn't show the expiration year of his tenure (although it was a foregone conclusion, what with Constitutional amendments and whatnot...)
Anyway, I'll post the entire set when our Non Sports Card message board gets launched, but here's a sample of a front and back:

I haven't been able to find any info on this set - I'd appreciate any knowledge any of y'all might have.

    Good for you.
  • Looks like he made the same "PSA" error on a few Mars cards. Ive seen some other Bubbles cards in the past (mainly Elvis).

There are quite a few Mars sets and partial sets available in the Lelands auction. It will be interesting to see how they do.

    Good for you.
  • Hi,

With regards to the Bubbles Inc. Mars Attacks Cards, These were released in the UK by A&BC Gum. The A&BC Mards Attacks are just as rare as the Topps versions, perhaps more so.

They reproduced many of the Topps sets under license and they were disributed in the UK and Ireland. There are A&BC versions of Civil War News, Battle (including extra cards as the A&BC Battle set has 73 cards in it!), Batman, Man On The Moon, Man Fron UNCLE and many others.

    A&BC Battle Set

A&BC also brought out cards of soccer players in the UK which are very collectable on this side of the pond.

A&BC stopped producing in 1974 when Topps started putting out cards with their own name on in the UK (not sure if Topps bought them out or not.)

    Hope that helps.

I'm a little confused here - all my Mars Attacks cards say Bubbles Inc. on the back and are regular Topps issue size, whereas the A&BC cards are bit smaller. I also find the English versions of these cards do not command the kinds of prices the American issues do.

Here's a scan comparing the Topps (Civil War News) to A&BC (Battle), along with one of the 1962 or '63 A&BC Footballer cards. I like the way they utilized the '62 Topps design:

  • Hi,

Sorry for the confusion. Yes, you are right, the cards are smaller. The A&BC Mars Attacks cards have Bubbles Inc. on the back along with 'printed in England', they don't say A&BC on them. The Battle cards do have A&BC on the backs. As regards pricing The UK cards do command good prices in the UK, similar to the US cards in the US, but I guess the UK have less appeal on your side of the pond. It is still near impossible to find quality raw cards over here.

As for the soccer cards, they used several of the US Baseball designs including 1959 and 1975.

If I can sort out my scanner I will try to post some pics.

Invader, please do post scans of the soccer cards. I love that they used Topps baseball designs. I wonder how that decision making process worked...how did they decide which ones were used? If you can, please include the year of the soccer issue when you post the scans. (example: Was the 75 baseball design used on the 75 soccer, or was it the 78 soccer?)
  • Hi,

I will try to get some scans up this week.

The design of 1975 Baseball was used on the 1975/76 season UK Soccer cards.

    thanks

And to Steve and all - I was delusional when I noted there were Mars cards in the current Lelands auction. Im not sure where I had seen them that night, but they are definitely not in the Lelands auction. Im sorry for the mess up.

Cant wait for the new boards. Im saving some goodies for the Movie Card thread we will have to have.

    Keith,

No relation to those Royals but we have traced my Family Tree back to Ida, King Of Bernicia (547-559 A.D.) There are also a few other Kings in the tree including Duncan I of Scotland (? - 1040 A.D.) who according to Shakespear was murdered by Macbeth.
