OK guys, just in from England - Nice cards - kind of thin stock but not very expensive for the entire set of 35 cards.
I once watched one of the Thin Man movies with Powell and Loy - kind of dry but classic - and they perpetuated a stereotype of drinking and smoking as absolutely "in."
<< <i>...it includes a bunch of cowboys like the Duke, wild bill elliot who I wouldn't even know if it were not for the reference on the Cosby Show! >>

Impossible to watch those old Wm Powell movies without stirring up a chilled, very dry, martini....

"All evil needs to triumph is for good men to do nothing."
Here is another of William Powell. Extremely debonair in many of his roles.
Nice set Mike. There are a couple of Phillips sets that are the same size and thickness of cards. I have a Characters Come to Life Set that is nice. Its of 36 cards however.
MorrellMan was kind enuff to send me some really cool turn of the century actress cards - this one looks like some kind of W series strip card of Mabel Norman who was in the silent screen. I have also included a photo of her. Known to generations of filmgoers as "The Queen of Comedy" and the "Female Chaplin;" there was also an interesting scandal involving her that hit the tabloids back then.
<< <i>Film director William Taylor was found murdered in his home. Mabel Norman, an associate of Arbuckle's, was apparently the last person to see Taylor alive. Although Norman was cleared of the crime, rumors surfaced that he was involved with drugs >>
Here's another nice one of the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show in '64. This one is from the Diary set. For some reason there are not too many graded from this set as of yet.
<< <i>Here's another nice one of the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show in '64 >>
Keith That is one of the greatest moments on TV! Is there a set value estimate in psa 8? I can't find it in the SMR. Really nice card and anyone who likes the Beatles would be proud to have a set like that. your friend Mike
you need to track down con40 on the set registry board - he shares you love of Don Mossi (who wouldn't??) and can nhow you some sh!t that will blow your MIND.
Mike - There isnt any SMR info on the Beatles Diary set as there have only been 18 cards graded (1-9, and 11-8's). So it might be awhile.
There are quite a few more graded from the Beatles Color and Beatles Movie sets. For some reason, there arent many from the Diary set although I prefer the color pictures over the sets with the black and white ones.
I am posting this picture since it has movie historical significance with respect to the future censorship of the motion picture industry. As many may know, in the early days of silent picture making, anything went since there was no 'board' standard for nudity and content.
<< <i> In the days before the film industry's stringent Hays Code was established and strictly enforced after 1934 to regulate "morally offensive" content, many silent and 'Pre-Code' taboo-breaking films contained adult-oriented material. In addition to nudity, sexuality and violence, they included candid depictions of drug use, prostitution, lawlessness, and religious blasphemy. >>
Here is a picture of June Caprice who was a minor actress but appeared nude for the first time in a feature film on screen - 16 year-old blonde starlet June Caprice (a Mary Pickford look-alike), in Fox's melodramatic Cinderella tale The Ragged Princess (1916), who appeared in a prolonged, nude swimming sequence. This hottie is the "Britney Spears" of the Art Deco era!
And an interesting picture on sale on ebay:
This stuff just comes alive when you look at a card and then put some background to the face you are looking at. I know many will look at this and not be interested. Whenever I look at a card - I like to know something about the person if it is from a by-gone era. your friend Mike
Ajw- The reason its listed as a Ringo Starr card is because the little fake diary writeup on the back of the card is from Ringo.
All of the cards in this set are labelled by who signed the diary entry. The entries are corny and were obviously not written by the Beatles themselves.
But its still a great colorful set that does have its centering problems.
Mike, I agree completely with you about the movie cards. I have learned a ton about stars that I was unfamiliar with and have had many surprises. Its been a nice diversion from baseball cards.
Keeping the scandal connection alive, heres a nice card of Thelma Todd who was involved in a "was it a suicide or was it a murder" controversy in 1935, the year of this card.
She was a movie star/restaurant owner who was found dead in her garage. Ill add a link to a little more explanation for those, if any, interested.
Keith - Very cool, regarding Thelma Todd. Her Sidewalk Cafe and upstairs apt. is still there, right past a bridge on the Pacific Coast Highway north of Pacific Palisades. It looks exactly the same, there hasn't been a public business there in 50 years or more, but somebody must own it and has preserved the exterior exactly as it looked 70 years ago. Over the years, I've heard people say it's been used for various things, but I have no idea what's true or what isn't. Seems her mystery continues!
Mark (amerbbcards)
"All evil needs to triumph is for good men to do nothing."
Keith Great card and story! Indeed the stories behind this old stuff is intriguing. BTW, the card I showed was another one gifted to me by MorrellMan - I love this stuff! And yes, it is a great diversion from just talking about sports. Have you got a card with "Fatty Arbuckle" on it? your friend Mike
Mike - No Arbuckles yet. My graded movie cards only go back to 1929. Thinking about it, the only Arbuckle cards I have seen (in my short tenure into this area) have been raw strip cards similar to the ones that have been posted.
Lee - Nice card. What did they come with? I wonder what the direct translation of the text is?
Here is a 1936 German tobacco card. I tried selling it on ebay once, and they cancelled the auction because Hitler was on the card. I would think they could find better things to do with their time.
<< <i>I believe it is the swastika, which is listed in their censored symbols. If you had blocked out the offensive image, you would have been good. >>
Your probably right Mark. If I hadn't put "Hitler" in the title, they most likely wouldn't have even seen it.
<< <i>here`s a rare item from a 6 card set called, " the infancy of christ " 1950`s (german origin) >>
<< <i>Lee - Nice card. What did they come with? I wonder what the direct translation of the text is? >>
The infancy of Christ card was produced by the Liebig Extract Of Meat Co. (Germany). They have produced over 2000 different sets of , each with 6 cards that have a theme or tell a story. They first started putting out cards in 1872 and ran until 1974 but them started again in 2001. These are very collectible but many sets can be obtained for only a few dollars.

Hi Matt Welcome! Just bought a nice hollywood star set from Creamofcards from the UK - he was very friendly - in fact the first to send me a "personal" email of thanx for the feedback and it's specific content. Your friend Mike
Thanks for the welcome. I collect baseball but have a large non-sports/cigarette collection as well. I have been reading around the boards for a few years and used to post as 'invader73' but lost my password after not posting for a year or so and had to re-register.
I have a good knowledge on British/ European cards, so if you need any info, just shout. I will also be sending a message to Joe O for a separate board.
I will try to get some pics up of a few of my fave cards.
Let me be very selfish and say that I kinda hope you guys *don't* get your own message board. I love reading this thread, as I get exposed to a ton of new and unusual stuff. I don't think I'd read the threads on your own message board, though.
How 'bout this...when you guys get your own board, throw us sports guys a bone every now and then and keep posting some of your great non-sports stuff!
Thought I'd post here to bump this back up to the top. Sent an email to Joe O. requesting a Non-Sport Forum. Started a second registry set, and set my first 6 submittals to PSA this week.

Yes, I have the complete set - I picked up a vending lot or some such of just really pristine CWNs a couple years ago, upgraded my set and sent the extras in to be graded. Most came back 8's and I put them up on eBay every once in a while.
