Inevitable. The piece never appeared to be the work of Felix Schlag. I'm a little surprised that the work is that of di Francisci and not that of John Sinnock, but not the least bit surprised that it cannot be attributed to Schlag.
Thanks fo the heads-up Jason!

That's interesting. Does anyone remember what evidence there was to support the claim it was a die trial?

Good website! I've added it to my favorites. Any word on the selection of the reverse design? I particularly like the Bison design (no surprise there!) I think it's better then the original and certainly hope it's chosen.

A note about this from Mike Diamond:
I suppose that if the de Francisci specimen was produced in the Mint, it would fall into the Pollock chapter "Die and Hub Trials". If it was produced outside the mint it would fall in with the coins in the Pollock chapter labeled "Semi-Official and Private Patterns". Maybe a note like "origin uncertain" or "provenience uncertain" would satisfy.

"It is struck in copper with a diameter of .854 inches and a weight of 109.4 grains."
It is apparently struck on some lead-colored, copper-plated base metal. Check the opposite face.
How much did Byers pay for it?
