I used to think the same way until I only bought PCGS/NGC coins from ebay. No problems since.

LongTimeCollector: I stopped bidding on E-Bay items months ago, and have much more spare time to enjoy other things including my coin collection. I got a few good deals there, but decided that it was not worth my time, and the hassle of shipping & receiving the items, and returning those that did not meet my satisfaction.

I have found that I enjoy the social aspects of coin collecting at Coin Shows, Coin Shops and Swap Meets. I also do alot better purchasing coins in person rather than from digital images.

When I first discovered coin collecting about 40 years ago, it was really innovative......... In the beginning, I bought and sold ANY coins and never knew i'd had a problem............. Today, i'm smarter and realize my innocence was taken advantage of by all kinds of dealers at shows, shops and through the mail.... People tying SEGS or ACG holdered coins to PCGS's pie in the sky price charts are rather humorous and i generally avoid them............ the words "estate" and " unsearched" are now ignored, also, along with most of the continual hype at shows, shops, catologs and online dealer sites......... Sellers who have "hissy" fits when the check isnt in their hand in 3 days, buyers who email 12 times in 2 days. did you get my check........... did you ship my coins........... they test my patience but i hold up my end of the deal and let time work things out......... This is my hobby and i enjoy it immensely. things have changed a lot since the 60's, but much remains the same !!!!!!!!!

I'll still collect as a get-a-way opportunity from the toil of everyday life. as for the Ms. and me, we'll use some of the major shows as an oppurtunity to vacation together............image

I've always felt that all the idiots that overhype, overgrade, missrepresent items, blah, blah blah would in the long run ruin ebay. Don't know what ebay can do. It would be too much for them to become coin police. If people would stop buying that junk the sellers would go away but that will never happen. There are too many people who love to buy coins and don't really understand the system that keep these people going. On the surface the items seem like bargains so novices take the bait and buy the junk. What's also amazing is how often nice legitimate coins go for low wholesale prices while junk brings way too much.

The problem of rip off artists on ebay is pervasive in the business. I often wonder what the coin business would be like if these people didn't exist.

Ebay for sure has much junk, but that just makes the quality coins all the more desireable to those who remain. As a collector selling off my coins, I get prices that would have been mostly impossible before the advent of Ebay.

Ebay makes collecting truly enjoyable because I can now find the coins and enjoy the thrill of that, and also sell the coins and watch the bidding go ape sh*t on my auctions because I can offer quality where the majority is junky.

    longtimecollector and others,
I feel your pain, brother, and there is no substitute to sitting down at a coin show with a dealer and discussing the coin issues of the day! As long as they have the time and an interest in you as a collector and possibly a buyer as well, that is the greatest satisfaction I derive from the hobby. More so than the coin and its value! People who care about others in the hobby and have valuable discourse with you is the most satisfying experiences in my view.
So, having said ALL that, use ebay for the entertainment value it offers. Nod your head when you agree and shake your head when you don't. Then move on to the next 'entertaining' tidbit you view there.
Ebay is NOT the end all that will meet all, but it is a boiling pot of the best and the worst we can get in our hobby, as well as others.
I've had successes and disappointments there. Mostly were valuable and so far, none too costly.

All in my humble opinion, of course!!!

I'm not there yet. There are still good deals to be had. You just have to scrutinize and buy carefully.

I don't see the problem, you guys. Ebay is what you make of it.

I have built a whole collection of a certain type of Canadian coins from eBay that I really couldn't have had access to anywhere else.

I am able to move coins I want to sell from my collection for way more money than I would be offered by local dealers.

I have found some great coins--and enjoyed the process.

I look at my eBay account as an asset I have maintained and one that is important to me. Like anything else you have to use eBay with some descrimination and common sense. If it's a zero feedback seller--don't bid. If they have a few negs (and especially look at how they respond to them)--don't bid. If you have any bad feeling at all--don't bid. There's always another auction.
