Look at My Early Commemorative Collection

Here's an image showing my attempt to assemble an Early Commemorative Type Set. I wish I could afford some of the coins that David Schweitz, Greg Bingham and others have but the costs for some of those coins approach my annual gross salary. I've drooled over images of many of them though.
I work for the U.S. Army in Seoul, Korea and I've had to purchase all these coins over the internet. Still, I think I have a respectable collection in progress and wanted a to share it with others who might enjoy looking. Please forgive the poor images of some of the coins. Enough said - here's the link (Only for those with a high speed internet connection as it's a 1.7 MB Jpg file).

I haven't found an Isabella that really moved me yet. I'm glad you like what I have so far.
<< <i>That is a gorgeous and very original set!! >>
Thanks. I've spent a lot of time over the past couple of years looking for coins that really grabbed my attention.
With several of the most spectacular toned commems I've ever seen !!
Steve
Yes indeed, you have assembled a nice set, with some beautiful original looking pieces.
Definitely need a nice Isabella to round this set out. Keep looking, you will find a nice piece. I have Isabellas and even in graded issues they are difficult to find nice original untampered with pieces. IMO of course...
First, Thats an incredable feat accomplished if all bought over the net during a military carreer.
Second: WOW!

<< <i>That long Island looks really nice, all of those are great, but that one really grabbed me. >>
It grabbed me too. As soon as I saw it on Pinnacle's web site I knew I had to have it and I usually don't buy the monster toners, I tend to go for the rim toned coins.
<< <i>Wow! Very nice set, but I would dump the toners and go for a more consistent look. >>
Glad you enjoyed looking! When I started the collection I decided that uniformity wasn't a big concern of mine. I wanted to collect the commems that really grabbed my eye. That's why you see coins from the California (Blast White) to the Long Island (Monster Toned) - they each were coins that I thought had outstanding eye appeal and I could afford (Sometimes stretching a lot)

Thanks for the "WOW!", and yes they have all been found and purchased over the internet. I spent 9+ years in the Air Force but am now an Army civilian working for the US Forces Korea. I've been here almost 4 years this time and all these coins were purchased while working here. Most of the coins flew back to the states last time I went and reside in a safe deposit box there until I return. I often wish I could look at them but for now I'll have to settle for the images not the coins.
I can only dream of being able to do what you have accomplished !!!

Thank you for taking the time to post the images. One frustrating thing about the registry sets is a lot of people post the coins and the grades but no image.
To actually be able to see the coins is a treat. You have assembled a fine set.
A collection of coins like yours, becomes a very unique thing. No one will ever have a collection exactly like it. They may find the same dates and mintmarks--but still your set will always have it's own character. Congratulations, and again thanks for taking the time to share it here.

Thanks for posting, I'd say more but I have to go back and look at the pictures again

<< <i>Pretty nice coins, especially the Elgin Half Dollar. Will you be adding any early gold commemoratives or the 1925 Norse American Medal? >>
Thanks for looking and the nice comments. I've been thinking about trying to add some of the gold commems when I get nearer to completing the set (The two Panama-Pacific $50.00 gold commemoratives are out though - way out of my price range

Youve got a great collection! I especially like your BTW as it has a nice bit of rim toning which is my favorite type! I've seen your collection in both the PCGS and NGC registries while I've built my collection. I've also had several of your ebay auctions on my watch list but I think it was usually at a time I was low on funds
<< <i>Beautiful coins, and a great series, IMHO.
nankraut -
I think it's a great series too. Got me back into collecting because I always remembered a gorgeous 1937-D Oregon Trail I owned when I was a teenager way back in the late 1960's. I'm glad you liked the coins!!
MFH - Although the Stone Mountain is "Only" an MS65 it is also one of my favorites because of that really neat rim tone it has on both sides. I'm glad you liked looking at the coins - I have a subset of them (28 coins) as my desktop wallpaper so I can enjoy their beauty often.
<< <i>... I like the combination of toned mixed with the white. I like your Lafayette dollar, the tab-toned Boone, the Maine, and Gettysburg. ... >>
mrcommem -
Ah, a kindred spirit who likes the mixture of toned and untoned coins! One of my primary aims is to obtain eye catching coins whether they are blast white, monster toned or in between. Of course I am kinda partial to pretty rim toned examples.
Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

Some of the coins were eBay purchases some Heritage Signature Auctions and a Bowers & Merena Auction. The rest were from the websites of Larry Whitlow, Ltd.; Pinnacle Rarities, Inc.; David Lawrence Rare Coins, Heritge Numismatic Galleries, and a few others. One of the eBay purchases (the California) was from Legend Numismatics.
