Modern folks, please help me...

Hi folks,

I collect early stuff, and don't know a whole heck of a lot about anything after 1900. Is this thing a mint set or a proof set?

    I believe that is a "mint" set...Does it have an "S" mint mark????

    Nope. The dime has a P mint mark.

    If you are really serious and really need an answer, it's a Proof set. The mint packaged and sold Proof sets in "flat packs" like this from June of 1955 to 1964. They came in brown envelopes.

    The 1965 Special Mint Sets came in a white envelope and were packaged similar to this. After that the mint started to use plastic cases of various types.
    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    I am completely serious and now worried. One of you is telling me it is a mint set and one of you is telling me it is a proof set. This is from 1960. Most of my collection is pre-1870 and MS so I am kind of lost here...

    Trust me. It's a Proof set.

    The mint sets had a different disk in the 6th spot on the holder. A small number of 1955 Proof sets had nothing at all in that spot. They were the first Flat Pack sets that were issued after the changeover from the box.

    It is a proof set. If the dime has a P mint mark, PM me and make some money.

    If it's a 1960 dime with a P mint mark, there can be only one answer. The coin is a counterfeit.

    The Philadelphia mint was not even dreaming about putting P mint marks on dimes in 1960.

    Sorry, Russ. It is an S. I thought it was a P, but broke out the loupe and upon closer inspection it is an S with a lovely carbon spot. This set is not what I would consider an item of great beauty. Lots of marks, some unattractive toning, etc. I doubt you would be interested. The only item that seems pretty clean is the quarter, which isn't a big ticket item I guess. This was in my Dad's stuff when he died and I always wondered what it was. Thanks, guys.

    Sorry, Russ. I'm like the roach motel for coins. They check in, but they don't check out. I have no idea what greysheet is on this thing, but I think I'll hang on to it for now.
