Received fake coins: what to do?

I (a newbie) received two seated dollars from auction on sleazeBay.
Although I am a newbie, I know enough to tell a cast coin from a struck
coin so I examined the coins under a 15x microscope and it was
obvious. These are the 1871 and 1872 dollars you can see for sale
(some state they are fake, so say they don't know - yea right).

The seller was contacted and claimed he was not aware of this and
that his dad left them to him, yada yada.. he said I should return them
and he'll refund my paypal.

Question is, do I return the coins? Or what?

Return it. the seller may be a fraudster, but everyone deserves (some) benefit of the doubt. give him/her a bit of leeway to make things right. Return it fully insured with tracking.

It's been about a week and I used paypal. If I return them
and he turns out to be a crook, I've just lost any evidence.

Return them, get your money back, and count this as a learning experience... a very cheap learning experience.

I would give him a chance to make things right. Some sellers in all honesty don't know a cast copy from an original. If you get your money back as he promises, I would consider it a positive transaction and not report the dealer. You don't have to know what your selling to sell on ebay.

Well make sure you send it back with a signature required so the seller can't say he never got them.
Also if it starts getting close to the 30 day limit for paypal file a claim with them and if you used a credit card with paypal let them know also.
I doubt the authorities would do much other than take the dollars.

Well, his story could be true, I heard a lot of people who know nothing about coins found fake coins in their parents' collections. Apparently, some DEALERs used to sell fake coins.

Here is some info I got from CU members not long ago.

You have 30 days to file a Buyers Complaint with PayPal

Send the coin with delivery confirmation. When/if the seller does not refund you threaten to file a negative, a fraud complaint with eBay, and a Square Trade dispute. Worked for a forum member Got the one seller who stiffed him removed from eBay.

Another thing, make sure if they refund you via PP they click the refund button, otherwise you refund is just another PP transaction and THEY CHARGE YOU FEES FOR GETTING YOUR OWN $$ BACK !!!

I think this was good advise that I recieved for returnig coins purchased on eBay.

You might want to photograph or scan them before you return them ASAP. Definately send them with signature confirmation as suggested above.

Invest in a good scale for weight and a set of digital calipers for dimensions. Even on travel to coin shows or dealers, you will have the information quickly and know if it is real or not!

Report him to who for what?

Worry about getting your money back. File a buyers Protection claim with Paypal, ship them insured with a return receipt.

Isn't there a "coin police" out there? They seem to have police for
just about everything else.
