Coin FinderCoin Finder Posts: 7,383 ✭✭✭✭✭
Anyone having trouble lately getting registered mail to Newport Beach Post Office or severe delays??

My package left Oregon Feb 5th and it has not made it to PCGS yet. In fact it has not made it to the post office according to the USPS website.

Thanks

I have a package delivered weeks ago but if you check on www.usps.com it says that the post office had been notified that a package will be mailed !

I asked the post office about why it takes so long for Registered mail, even when it is not traveling a long distance, and even taking into account that it is carefully monitored and stored.

They said that if the package is leaving from a post office, or area that has relatively few registered packages, they may wait to get a certain number before they are sent out of the PO or area. This delay could be several days, and may explain why it is taking so long to go from Oregon to Newport Beach.

  • My registered packets to PCGS seem to take between five and seven days.
Which is not bad considering the distance.

  • I use FedEx overnight when sending to PCGS. I figure that when paying $16/30 a coin for grading saving me another week for $22 is well worth it. If it does not show up tomorrow I will know about it. The downside is that with FedEx (with coins) the max insurance is $100. They will no honor a coin insurance claim but then again I only know this because I read it. I have not experienced it.

    Clackamas,
You're asking for trouble. Fedex won't insure coins. If your package disappears, or breaks open, you're screwed, unless you have outside insurance covering it.
  • USPS Express services might help. A couple bucks more, but all 3 types come with delivery confirmation/signature guarantee.
Also, all 3 types can be tracked. Like UPS parcels, they scan in/out each depot, so you have a better idea what's happening with your package.
Standard insured or registered packages will only display a result for delivery completion or first delivery attempt, and then only when they feel like getting around to updating.

You know the postal employee in Newport Beach that was stealing all the packages two years ago is most likely out of jail now........ and back to work for the USPS image

Heritage uses FEDEX for expensive coins so I assume that Heritage has some other type of insurance in the event that there is a lost package!

  • The US Mint has started using FedEx for international shipping, which is a shame as the postman is well trained!
I will have to train the FedEx guy.

  • From Florida to PCGS, US Mail registered has taken me as little as
3 days and as much as 12. The return trip varies the same.

The USPS is very inefficent and in some areas INCOMPETENT as all federal agencies are.

    Bajjerfan,
I'm sure they do. Either that, or they have a custom contract with Fedex. Any volume shipper can make a deal. Ever get a computer via UPS or Fedex from Dell? They only pay ~$50 for shipping, where if you tried to ship the same thing to them, on your account, it would probably cost $200.

Maybe so but even he wasn't stealing Registered mail. Just those nice heavy Priority Mail packages that were just casually tossed in with first class mail.

If PCGS takes 4 months, than a week or two more in the mail does not really matter that much, does it?

I bought a computer from Dell right around Christmas time. Shipping was free as part of the special tho I did note on the invoice that it was around $50. Never had to send one back as I recall.

My last was three days. Shipped on Monday, logged in at PCGS on Thursday. I think I have a pretty good local post office that gets them out right away.

    They do use private insurance...

if you need private coverage, go to U-Pic.com and register as a low volume shipper... I can insure first class stuff without leaving my house (and pay half of USPS), and FedEx is $.30/$100... just be sure to get a waiver for sending coins.

The Post office called me today and said that it finally came in. no reason why it was delayed. 6 business days.

I am suspecting Valentine's Day mail increase caused the registered mail to get on a different flight out of Portland.

It went to PCGS and was logged there as well.

The USPS Web site still shows no delivery.

I am relieved. Thanks to all who responded.

  • Shipped my package to PCGS, insured-Priority/Registered mail on May 12th, and it is now May 29th and it still hasn’t arrived at PCGS.
    Is this typical of USPS?

What did the post office say when you called them?

@dreamedreamer... Welcome aboard. Registered mail is super reliable but notoriously slow, since it must be signed for and secured at each station along the way. Call the Post Office. Cheers, RickO

Think of a snail and then think of registered mail. Think of a turtle, and that could be applied to a lot of the mail service these days.

I’ve had first class letters with checks in them take two weeks to get delivered. I had a shipment of collectibles take over three weeks, and the box arrived damaged. At least the material was still inside, undamaged.

Registered Mail doesn't have tracking like Priority and Express do. You only know when it shows up, not where it is through the journey and when it is expected to arrive. And for me, THAT is the problem.

Tracking has gotten better in the 17 years since this post was originally written.

That what was post from 17 years ago! It did arrive eventually. I was told that when a postal employee goes on vacation, the registered packages will sit in the "cage" for up to week before moving again. They have to be hand signed for by postal employees in and out the whole way to its final destination.

I’ve played the registered mail game several times. I shipped a registered mail package with an express and they both arrived at the same time.

Lately, it seems to take 2 weeks to get from Washington DC to Newport Beach.

I can get updates along the way but usually only 2-3 times.

Is there a certain criteria that makes you decide to use registered mail?

Usually packages over $100,000. I’ve shipped $50,000+ via express mail several times. Pucker factor was pretty high but nothing has came up missing.

For the poster who necromanced this thread: I just sent PCGS a package via registered mail on the 18th and it was finally received yesterday. After 5 days of showing no movement, I found an old thread on this forum that suggested filing a help request form, which ended up working. The next day, the tracking details were updated and it reached PCGS in 2 days from the request.

I found out today you can not check tracking on registered mail till it is delivered

I signed up for SHIP AND INSURE for insurance ...ANA members get a discount .... I still ship via USPS registered but never like them to know what level of valuables was in the box. I always double box even if 1 piece

Not sure how good the insurance recovery process is as I never had to file a claim - knock on wood. I have had good luck with USPS and their tracking seem solid ...only once did a package make a detour . I only ship 3 or 4 times a year however
