I don't follow - is this some new fee? Didn't they always charge a lot for walkthroughs?

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

$100 per coin is the normal walkthrough price. $65 for 5 or more coins under $1500 in value.

Is this replacing the $100 walk-thru, or a new tier? If it's a new tier and the $100 walk-thru is still available, I don't see what the complaint is. Nobody is forcing you to pay it.

sounds like greed to me - I thought the $100 was a bit much. A show is supposed to be a FUN thing, rite? You'd think they would have a show special vs. jacking up price. Yes, that probably does include a steak dinner and bottle of wine ......... for THEM. IMHO

In the immortal words of Gordon Gecko: "Greed is good!" Agree with Russ: nobody is holding a gun to your head, there's lots of cheaper grading services. If I owned the numero uno grading service and people had hot pants to get their coins done right there, I'd charge whatever they'd pay.

Yeah, I guess all the crackout artists grabbing coins at the show and whipping out the hammer on the back table will need to make damned sure they ripped a good one. image

$100 service has been taking almost a full day to a day and a half at shows. On a $25-50k coin, what's another $100 to get it back in an hour instead? Seems like a very smart price model to me. Don't like it? Then don't pay it......

<< <i>Nobody is forcing you to pay it. >>

    Russ--

I got this email from PCGS this morning:

<<Dear Mr. Clankeye, you will be flown to Florida, Wed Jan 7th and forced at gun point to submit five coins in our new $200 walk through service. Please dress appropriately.>>

    I'm peeved.

Just to clarify, the $200 service is an additional option for those who need their coin(s) back REALLY fast. As tradedollarnut noted, our show volume has increased tremendously over the past year and a half, and this super-rush service supplements (but does not replace) our current show services.

Business 101...charge what the market will bear.
    Supply and demand.

If you want your coin turned around asap, then what is it worth to you? Obviously, PCGS feels it is worth $200 or more to many people...or, they don't have the resources to get the $100 walk throughs done so they move it up..

So, now, people will b itch about the prices instead of the turn around times, right?

    Hehh....glad I don't fit the bill.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

    Mr. sherman

I own my own business and can appreciate charging fees for different services. Where did the double the normal $100 fee come from? I guess I have sticker shock. For the record I would not spend $200 to have a coin graded at a show. I have paid $100 quite a few times and have always thought $100 was too high.

NGC gets my show grading money about 90% of the time because of the high fee PCGS charges. NGC also finds a way to get the coins graded QUICKLY and at $55 a coin.

I don't understand what all the bruhaha is. The $200 show service is, after all, a whole new tier. Now, what I am concerned with is the impact this will have on the lesser tiers. I.e., will this new tier slow down the $100 tier?

Does anybody have an estimate of how long it takes to grade a coin with the $200 grading fee? I'm just curious to what that breaks down to per hour- that might top what lawyers charge! image

I usually stick with raw coins so that price won't have any outcomes with me but it makes me wonder how many coins will be turned in at the $200 rate and come back with the plastic being worth more than the coin.

Maybe the people who paid $100 before have too much money and $200 won't make any difference to 90% of them and if pcgs gets swamped at the $200 level then these people will get mad if their coins are not done the same day.

I guess the dealers dipping coins in the restrooms will need to "Cut the dip" more with tap water to make up for the increased fees. I hear jewel luster is going up as well.

let me quote my own post above smartypants

<< <i>For the record I would not spend $200 to have a coin graded at a show >>

it really is no skin off my back with PCGS charging $200 a coin for quick service since I barely use them for even the $100 service.
